Even though the multicloud concept is spreading its wings, the chaos or complexity that comes with it is causing some challenges.  

Since multicloud is at an inflection point, VMware Inc. has taken up the mantle of taming the complexity that crops up, according to Purnima Padmanabhan (pictured), senior vice president and general manager of cloud management at VMware. VMware Aria plays an instrumental role in realizing this objective.

“Every time a new technology hits, you have some point of adoption, and then it becomes insanely successful, and that’s when the complexity hits,” Padmanabhan stated. “With Aria, we said we have to fundamentally change the problem. We are constantly running a race of taming this complexity.”

Padmanabhan spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier and Dave Vellante at the last VMware Explore event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how VMware eliminates multicloud complexity using features like Aria. (* Disclosure below.)

Eradicating the swivel-chair management approach

By presenting end-to-end solutions, Aria eliminates the need for going from one app to another, according to Padmanabhan. For instance, Aria Guardrails makes multicloud seamless by dealing with log-ins and credentials.

“We also announced a set of crosscutting solutions … the big thing is it removes the swivel-chair management; it allows you to answer questions you couldn’t answer before,” she noted. “What Aria Guardrails allows you to do is set up these multicloud environments with the right policies, and not only is it about one-time provisioning, but it is maintaining them on a runtime basis.”

Tackling the complexity experienced in multicloud necessitates going the extra mile, according to Padmanabhan. As a result, Aria helps in comprehending multicloud environments and their features.

“I don’t need to know everything, just the environment and its dependencies,” she pointed out. “Then I can now start solving problems and answering questions that I was unable to before. And newer technologies can keep coming and piling on, but I’ll always be able to answer that.”

Since native public cloud environments are a different ball game based on highly fragmented data, VMware devised Aria to solve this problem, not just for one cloud or discipline, Padmanabhan noted. Aria takes a holistic approach using features such as Aria Hub, which solve management challenges by creating a near real-time map of a company’s environment.

“We looked at that problem and said we need to have a management solution that solves that problem, focused on native public cloud and cloud-native apps,” she stated. “You’re managing to optimize cost, performance and security and speed up the delivery.”
