Women of the cloud: nurturing the next generation while making waves in tech

One of the many roles women can take on is the important role of a mother, nurturing and raising the next generations.

Many mothers also take on additional roles, including within the enterprise technology industry. While striking the balance between working and raising kids is a struggle many parents face, several organizations are doing what they can to support mothers in the workforce, especially in the tech industry.

“You go in any business today and there is a mother’s room, which enables you to have the privacy and the time, and the relentless support that I have from my leadership team to make sure that I’m able to manage all the things that come with being a new mom,” said Trish Taite (pictured, right), head of retail, CPG, travel and hospitality, west enterprise, at Amazon Web Services Inc. “It has just been incredible and, overwhelmingly, makes it easier right at the end of the day.”

Taite and Susanna Dyer (left), director of global cloud alliances at Trend Micro Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Lisa Martin during an exclusive Women of the Cloud interview on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how being a mother affects their working life, misconceptions about being both a mother and a working woman, upcoming projects their own teams are working on and more. Being a super mom and striking a balance

Being a mom has reminded Dyer how important time is and how it is one of the greatest gifts available. Filling your calendar with “purposeful” work is more important than keeping busy, especially when workers have families they care for. Logging off during non-work hours is an important, daily step Dyer takes to enjoy her own family time. Being a mother has also made her more ambitious as a worker in the tech industry.

“I almost felt like now I have someone watching me. Motherhood has awakened more ambition, which is interesting. The stakes are higher, and I now have a little group of people that are looking at me to say, wow, you can do hard things,” Dyer said. “I feel responsible to be able to say I can do hard things and so can you. That model of showing my kids what’s possible is so inspiring to me, more than anything else. I want to keep doing more.”

Being both mothers and dedicated team members, Dyer and Taite are eager to dispel the myth that being both is a difficult task that requires striking a balance. Being a mother makes a person more well-rounded and empathetic, according to Dyer. It also allows a mom to see things from a different perspective, including being a better leader since they’ve learned to connect to people on deeper levels.

“You really have an attitude of ‘this is my purpose, and I’m doing things intentionally.’ I absolutely think motherhood has made me even more intentional with where I’m going to go with my career,” Dyer said. “You can’t have it all, sometimes. Some things go up; some things go down. But that’s OK. We can still have ambition, and we can still be able to be great role models for our kids.”

The conversations ended with the women discussing recent wins their own teams achieved. Trend Micro, is partnering with AWS to launch a product that will allow customers to deploy the right cloud formation templates and security measures at the same time. Additionally, the team is working on a service integrator that will work together with AWS and Trend Micro to help customers with mass migrations.

“Most recently, we had an airline that was able to adopt one of our customer care solutions called Amazon Connect. And they’ve been able to see such incredible changes to the way that they’re able to serve their customers,” Taite said.

Modernizing the airline’s technology and moving it to a data-driven platform allows the company’s customers to have a better experience when calling into an airline.

“When your flights get canceled, it can already be stressful and an … anxious type of moment. Anything that we can do there to help the agents on the backend have the data and the tools, so that’s what the Amazon Connect solution really can do, provide that better customer experience.”
