Momento believes in serverless to solve database caching headaches

When users visit Momento Inc.’s website, the message is hard to miss. Right from the opening screen, the company’s motto, “Believe in Serverless,” conveys the startup’s approach.

Momento believes in serverless because it drives the company’s mission to automatically optimize, scale and manage cache for businesses large and small.

“Serverless just means that we, as the database and infrastructure experts, take on the painful infrastructure management on behalf of our end users and our customers,” said Daniela Miao (pictured), co-founder and chief technology officer of Momento. “We abstract away the complexity so they have more time and energy to focus on what differentiates their product. To us, serverless really is just a way to accelerate development, reduce cost, reduce complexity and simplify our end users’ architecture.”

Miao spoke with Lisa Martin, industry analyst for theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, in advance of the “Analytics and Cost Optimization” AWS Startup Showcase on June 8. They discussed how Momento leverages its serverless solution to simplify caching for enterprise developers and achieve cost saving at scale. (* Disclosure below.)

Eliminating manual work

Caching can be a constant source of irritation for many developers, because the process for deploying cache can be time-consuming. The caching system for a software project often requires system configuration and testing to make sure it runs as expected. Then there is the work to maintain the infrastructure on which it runs.

Momento seeks to make this a seamless process by eliminating much of the manual work and connecting its cloud-based cache with a few lines of code.

“We work with a lot of small startups that are just getting started and they can’t manage caching infrastructure on their own,” Miao said. “They can get started with Momento with just a couple of lines of code, with a few clicks. We also work with large enterprises that have existed for decades and decades.”

The company’s solution is targeted at a pain point for many enterprises. Getting the timing right on when to expand cache can be highly difficult to gauge.

“It’s always too early or too late to add caching,” Miao said. “When you are a small startup or when you are starting out as a business, you’re never going to focus on the optimization. That’s why it’s too early to add cache. When you quickly hit that point of growth when you are exploding in popularity, all of a sudden all of these problems are happening all over your architecture; no one really has time to go and add cache. To time it right is very difficult.”

A common use case for Momento is with traditional databases, such as Amazon Regional Database Service, or RDS. The cost savings benefit has proven to be an attractive selling point as well, according to Miao.

“With something like caching on top of it, you are able to really utilize and offload a lot of the traffic to your cache, thereby saving you a lot of money on the databases,” she said. “Amazon RDS Aurora, Amazon RDS MySQL, Amazon RDS Postgres, those are all popular databases that we provide caching on top of. Others use us even with services like DynamoDB, a very beloved developer product as well.”
