Embracing multicloud and AI: Dell’s vision for the future

In a world increasingly dominated by cloud computing and artificial intelligence, Dell Technologies Inc. is charting an ambitious course into the future.

Chuck Whitten (pictured), co-chief operating officer of Dell Technologies Inc., outlined the company’s bold vision during a keynote at Dell Technologies World in Las Vegas. Amid discussions of multicloud strategy, harnessing the power of AI and transforming the future of work, Whitten underscored Dell’s commitment to driving innovation, solving complex problems and empowering businesses to thrive in the digital age.

“Last year, we stood on stage and said, ‘Look, there’s an enormous number of problems that CIOs are facing today … multicloud, edge, security and AI,” Whitten said. “Flash forward a year, we just delivered an enormous payload of innovation, particularly around the multicloud topic.”

Whitten spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at Dell Technologies World, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed multicloud advancements, the future of work and the role of AI in reshaping business processes. (* Disclosure below.)

Accelerating innovation in multicloud infrastructure

Dell has been focused on making strides in multicloud innovations over the past year, including solving the complex issue of multicloud management. Organizations are running between four to eight cloud infrastructures and seek a way to unify these disparate platforms, according to Whitten.

“The problem I’m trying to solve is how do I make it all act as one single platform, one unified cloud. That’s the challenge that we’re in the middle of solving in multicloud,” he said.

One topic that consistently featured in Whitten’s customer conversations over the past year was AI. While AI isn’t new, the visibility and significance of AI for businesses have increased, he explained.

“Companies are saying, ‘OK, there’s these large language models, large unbounded public data models. How am I going to do that on a subset of my data?’” Whitten said. “I think where the evolution of the conversation is going is from ML or focused conversations inside a company about AI to ‘OK, there’s these great unbounded public data models that I can use. How do I get it now on my data for solving my specific business problem?’”

AI is not just a tool for automating tasks, but it can also enhance creativity and productivity. While acknowledging that some jobs might be replaced by AI, Whitten remained optimistic about the increased productivity due to the capabilities of AI tools.

Building for this moment: Extracting value from data

The current technological moment is fundamentally about data — controlling, securing and, most importantly, extracting value from it. With Dell’s leadership in data storage and its capabilities to solve multicloud and data problems, Whitten asserted the company is well-positioned to help businesses manage and leverage their data.

“We’re the leader in data storage, we’re bigger than number two, number three, number four combined. We have the IP and the capabilities to solve multicloud but also to solve a lot of these data problems,” he said. “We’re positioned as a natural partner in a very complex ecosystem.”
