Exploring cyber resiliency: Safeguarding the future of data protection

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, cyber resiliency has become a critical concern for organizations worldwide.

As the threat of cyberattacks continues to grow, businesses must ensure they are prepared to defend against and recover from potential breaches. Dell Technologies Inc. recognizes the importance of cyber resiliency and offers comprehensive solutions to address this challenge.

“We understand customers’ pain points, and one way of avoiding errors and loss of data in the environment is not just building a cyber vault, but making sure that the environment is wrapped up and simple,” said David Noy (pictured, left), vice president of product management at Dell.

Noy and Rob Emsley (right), head of data protection and cyber resiliency marketing at Dell, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at Dell Technologies World, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed cyber resiliency and its implications for data protection. (* Disclosure below.)

The ‘three I’s’ approach to cyber resiliency

To understand cyber resiliency, it is essential to explore how Dell defines it. Three key elements shape its approach: immutability, isolation and intelligence.

Immutability ensures the preservation and security of data copies, preventing tampering. Isolation involves storing data in an air-gapped location, safeguarding it from potential breaches. Lastly, intelligence focuses on analyzing data for attack signatures, enabling prompt detection and recovery.

“Recovery is table stakes” in achieving cyber resiliency, Noy explained. “I think … the number of attacks have just gone up and up and up. The volumes have gone up, and people realize now that you need a clean room environment to bring your data back into. So those compromises could be so prevalent within your environment that if you don’t come back into an air-gaped clean room environment, there’s a chance that you bring your data back and you’re hacked all over again.”

The rise in cyberattacks, including the pervasive threat of ransomware, highlights the urgency for organizations to embrace cyber resiliency. No industry is exempt from these threats, and Dell has witnessed attacks across diverse sectors, Emsley emphasized. Furthermore, cyber resiliency is essential for organizations to recover when breaches occur, ensuring business continuity and protecting brand reputation.

Dell’s integration of design principles

Dell incorporates key design principles to enhance cyber resiliency. Its solutions focus on three core aspects: resilience, simplicity and security. The heritage of Dell’s data protection portfolio emphasizes its products’ stability and resilience, Emsley explained. Simplicity is another crucial factor, as it minimizes the risk of errors and data loss.

Also, Dell’s end-to-end ownership of the product stack allows it to secure the entire system, from hardware to software, providing comprehensive protection against cyber threats.

“One of the biggest misconceptions that customers have is that it’s not gonna happen to me,” Emsley stated. “You know, my industry is not a big enough focus for cyber criminals. And that is really just proving to not be the case … cyber criminals are looking to disrupt every customer across every segment and then look to them for financial benefit.”

Despite the growing awareness of cyber resiliency, some organizations still lack confidence in their existing measures. Until an organization experiences a breach, doubts may persist, Emsley acknowledged.

To build confidence, Dell stresses the importance of hiring professionals who have encountered cyberattacks, as they bring valuable insights and a proactive approach to cybersecurity. Dell’s global services team plays a crucial role in supporting customers and ensuring they are prepared to navigate the steps required for cyber resiliency.
