Checkout.com introduces AI-powered Identity Verification service for enhanced security

Payments processing provider Checkout.com Inc. today launched its first product focused on improving the customer onboarding and identity verification process.

Checkout.com’s new Identity Verification service uses artificial intelligence trained on billions of identity and facial recognition documents. The solution leverages an in-depth list of identification documents from 195 countries, enabling the Identity Verification service to verify nearly every citizen worldwide. Coming into the launch, Checkout.com’s Identity Verification verified more than 10 million identities and identified more than 1 million fraudulent identities in its beta testing phase.

The problem Checkout.com’s Identity Verification service is attempting to address is a well-known one: identity fraud, which constantly evolves as deep fakes and deceptive documents become increasingly sophisticated. Checkout.com argues that traditional single-frame photos often fail because of poor image quality or outdated fraud detection systems.

Checkout.com Identity Verification addresses identity fraud by incorporating AI-supported video streaming at a rate of 25 frames per second with 1,000 images per flow. Users can employ the video mode on their mobile phones to show an identity document and their face.

The service uses AI guides to guide users throughout the process, offering real-time feedback on demonstrating document authenticity and optimizing facial recognition to counter fraud. Checkout.com’s AI can also identify invalid documents, such as false passports or driving licenses.

“Legacy systems requiring an appointment with a human being or limited to certain days a week are not conducive to the long-term growth of the digital economy,” Meron Colbeci, chief product officer at Checkout.com, explained ahead of the product’s release. “By utilizing AI and algorithms trained on billions of data points alongside a video stream that simply requires an internet connection, we can now verify identity documents to facilitate customer onboarding and comply with [know your customer] requirements quickly and accurately.”

One interesting feature of Checkout.com Identity Verification is its compatibility with any internet-connected device, which is said to eliminate the need for specific apps or software. Users can verify their identity at any time and from anywhere and the interface can be customized with businesses’ logos and branding, a process that takes about two minutes.

The Identity Verification solution from Checkout.com supports more than 3,000 identity documents and can efficiently verify authentic identities, the company says. By analyzing the movement of the identity document in the video, the AI can detect hologram and color changes commonly found in legitimate documents and assess transparency and opacity. Users perform simple face movements that the AI analyzes to identify possible deep fakes or fraudulent identity documents.
