What to expect during the AWS Startup Showcase ‘Cybersecurity’ event: Join theCUBE Sept. 14
There was a time when cybersecurity involved nothing more than storing sensitive data on a separate device and turning the computer off at night.
Now, with increasingly more complex interconnected systems and networks, the business of data protection has evolved into the challenges of managing critical information stored in multiple platforms, mitigating threats and ensuring compliance.
How these challenges are reshaping the technology landscape and driving holistic approaches to cybersecurity in the digital age will be explored during the “Cybersecurity” AWS Startup Showcase event on September 14 at 10 a.m. PT. TheCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, will examine how companies are staying ahead in the ever-evolving realm of digital security through interviews with leading innovators in the cybersecurity field. Managing security platforms
Founders from a number of startup companies will showcase their cutting-edge solutions and highlight the collaborative efforts involved in cybersecurity management, resilience and meeting increasingly more complex compliance standards. The showcase comes at a time when the rise of generative AI is presenting the security community with new challenges and the threat landscape remains a concern for enterprises around the globe.
“Everything is still vulnerable, we know that better than anybody,” said Maria Markstedter, chief executive of Azeria Labs UG, during her keynote remarks at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas earlier this month. “That’s what pays our bills, and that’s why we are a multibillion-dollar industry.”
Platform management has emerged as a major issue for many enterprises as network complexity has grown and the tools needed to secure systems have multiplied. A report issued last year found that 39% of respondents were managing 11 to 30 monitoring tools to protect systems.
Two of the startup firms slated to participate in theCUBE’s program provide solutions for the platform management arena. Securiti Inc. provides security and privacy features in a single platform, designed to replace multiple software tools. The company, which emerged from stealth in 2019, secured $75 million in financing last fall and recently added Capital One Venture and Citi Ventures as investors.

JupiterOne Inc., another startup scheduled to participate on September 14, is a cyber asset attack surface management company. It models data and provides analyses out of the box so that companies can focus on implementing comprehensive security practices and guarding valuable assets.
“I do think that we’re at a point where we have enough painkillers and Band-Aids,” said Erkang Zheng, founder and chief executive officer of JupiterOne, in an interview with SiliconANGLE. “We need to start looking at how we can do better, fundamentally, with the basics and do the basics well. Because a lot of times, it’s the basics that get you into trouble.”
Fighting ransomware
Trouble can quickly be found when an organization gets breached by malicious actors. Earlier this month, security researchers disclosed that the Monti ransomware collective had resumed operations, after a brief break, with a Linux-based encryptor.
Showcase participant Halcyon Tech Inc. was founded in 2020 with a mission to defeat ransomware. Halcyon’s solution employs tools for preventing initial intrusion, disrupting attacks in progress and reversing the impact in the event of a successful breach.
“We started with the premise that all cybersecurity solutions are inevitably bypassed,” co-founder and chief executive Jon Miller said earlier this spring. “We engineered Halcyon to embrace failure as a core concept of protection. Stopping ransomware requires multiple prevention and detection techniques, all trained extensively on years of actual ransomware attacks.”
Another participating startup, Elastio Inc., was founded by the team behind AppAssure, a backup and recovery software application that was acquired by Dell in 2012. Elastio is a cloud-native platform designed to safeguard data from risks posed by ransomware, app failures or storage security flaws. In June, the company announced an oversubscribed $18 million Series A investment led by Venture Guides, with participation from Bain Capital.
Cloud Storage Security is another company participating in the event that protects cloud workflows and data from threats. The company’s platform aims to empower organizations with automated solutions that help prevent breaches, meet compliance requirements and manage sensitive data. In July, it partnered with CrowdStrike Inc. to deliver AI-powered malware scanning. And earlier this year, it released its Storage Assessment functionality, which gives customers detailed information about their Amazon S3 storage state.

Compliance support
Cybersecurity compliance has emerged as a key area of focus for many enterprises. This is being driven by not only an increase in cybercrime and a heightened need for constant monitoring, but also consumer interest in data privacy, increased third-party risks and the demands of IT governance.
Three of the showcase participants offer compliance solutions. Thoropass Inc. (formerly Laika) pairs software and expert guidance with the audit experience to provide a compliance automation platform.
Secureframe Inc. has developed a cloud-based service to reduce the amount of manual work necessary for companies to achieve compliance with cybersecurity standards such as SOC2, ISO27001, HIPAA and PCI. Automated scanning tools of a firm’s infrastructure can quickly determine whether a company is meeting compliance requirements. Vanta Inc. also provides compliance audit support.
“Vanta, ultimately, is a tool that gives you an automatic way to prepare for your SOC2 audit or your ISO27001 audit — or insert a long list of dozens of standards we’re working on here,” said Rob Picard, security lead at Vanta, in an interview with SiliconANGLE. “The standard itself is not a list of controls, but what we can do is we can provide you that list of controls … and we can say this is what you need to do to get started here.”
