VMware and NetApp work together to simplify multicloud, on-prem and hybrid environments

As enterprises continue to grapple with the challenge of governing and orchestrating all their IT assets — from on-prem to hybrid and multicloud — an out-of-the-box approach is needed, according to John Gilmartin (pictured, left), senior vice president and general manager for cloud storage at VMware Inc.

Based on a partnership that spans more than 20 years, VMware and NetApp Inc. are providing consistent architecture for any environment — from containers, virtual machines, on-prem or cloud.

“The strategy is to offer this consistent software stack … whether it be compute, storage, networking and make it a consistent stack regardless of the deployment model,” Gilmartin said. “If you go to hyperscale or you go to AWS, you go to Amazon, you get the same experience and the same capabilities, and then extending those capabilities with partnerships. That’s why the partnership with NetApp on multicloud is so critical.”

Gilmartin and Phil Brotherton (right), vice president of solutions at NetApp, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier and Rob Strechay at VMware Explore 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how the VMware-NetApp partnership delivers a consistent stack, regardless of the workload environment. (* Disclosure below.)

Why vSphere is a game-changer

vSphere has enabled more workloads to run on the same infrastructure. As a result, it has changed the storage segment based on the need for scale and performance, Brotherton pointed out.

“The strategy was we’ve got to move forward on VMs,” he said. “We’ve got to move forward to containers, modern workloads. We’ve got to get to the cloud. That process keeps going … vSphere 9.”

Since offering cloud-smart solutions are top of mind for VMware and NetApp, they have teamed up to offer operations management and a consistent experience across multicloud environments, according to Brotherton. Innovation is at the heart of both companies.

“Both companies, we always focus on innovation for customers and focus on being a great place to work,” he said. “Those, I think, are the themes of great Silicon Valley companies.”
