Adobe’s Firefly generative AI is now commercially available in Express, Photoshop and Illustrator
Creative software developer Adobe Inc. today announced that it’s making its image generating artificial intelligence models, dubbed Firefly, commercially available across its products through the Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Express after a successful six-month beta test.
Adobe introduced Firefly in March describing it as a “family of generative AI models for creative expression” that it intended to provide to users to power art generation. It began with two tools, one that allowed users to create images based on text descriptions called “Text to Image,” and one that produced text effects similar to WordArt.
“With over 2 billion generations, creators amazed us with their engagement and feedback to the Firefly beta, inspiring us to deliver generative AI capabilities that are designed to be commercially safe and seamlessly integrated into the interfaces customers love,” said Ely Greenfield, chief technology officer of digital media at Adobe.
Adobe Firefly-powered capabilities have already been incorporated into multiple Creative Cloud apps. Photoshop has Generative Fill and Expand that allows users to use text prompts to expand or change images. For example, it is possible to take an image of a beach and tell the AI to add a floating castle to the sky with or add pirate ships to the ocean. Illustrator has Generative Recolor and Text to Image and Text Effects is present in Adobe Express.
Firefly’s generative AI capabilities are also available for video in Adobe’s video creation app Premiere Pro, which is used by broadcasters and video producers to turn raw footage into production ready video. After Effects, a digital visual effects and motion graphics post-production software suite, also has AI-enabled capabilities that can be adjusted with text prompts such as animations and keying.
Adobe also announced the launch of a new version of its Firefly web application, which can be used to experiment and explore with AI-assisted creative expression.
For enterprise users, Adobe introduced GenStudio, a new solution that provides an integration of AI-powered tools that allows for taking content from idea to production. It takes advantage of Firefly’s generative AI models, Creative Cloud apps such as Express to help them automate editing and revising marketing materials right out of the box.
As part of the release, Adobe focused on features added to Express. It has become an all-in-in-one editor that allows users to make high-impact design elements, engaging videos and images, PDFs, animations and content right where they need it. With Firefly integration, they can generate custom images and text on the fly just by using natural language and asking the AI to generate it for them in over 100 languages.
Users of the Firefly-based models who subscribe to Creative Cloud paid plans will pay for their use of the AI generated content through what Adobe calls “fast” generative credits. These credits are tokens that enable customers to turn their text-based prompts into image and vector creations in Photoshop, Illustrator, Express and the Firefly web application quickly – essentially giving them high priority.
According to the company, Express Premium and Creative Cloud paid plans will receive an allocation of “fast” generative credits that they can use for their artwork. Once those are consumed, they can still keep using Firefly-powered integrations, but they will be pushed to the back of the line behind other users and be generated more slowly.
Beginning in November, Adobe will begin offering plans for users to purchase additional “fast” credits through subscription packs.
