Effectively addressing security challenges through visibility, trust and actionable data

Maintaining brand reputation is vital for any company, as even a minor breach in an office can greatly affect stock price and how the public perceives the company.

For this and other reasons, Hubble Technology Inc., a cybersecurity consulting business, was created to address inconsistent technology environments. The need for visibility in security operations is rising constantly, with companies looking for trust, actionable data and context to help it address security challenges, according to Tom Parker (pictured), founder and chief executive officer of Hubble.

“Security is very much a game of scale,” Parker said. “Think about all of the busy work that is created by not having clarity around data in security operations. Getting to a decision is … a painstaking process and takes a lot of time if you don’t have a product like Hubble.”

Parker spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and Dave Vellante at the Fal.Con event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Hubble as a platform that integrates with various technologies to help organizations manage cybersecurity risks and protect assets. (* Disclosure below.)

Leveraging other technologies

In today’s complex environments, with the next generation of technologies, a different approach is required to inventory and properly understand all of the assets, according to Parker. Hubble aims to tackle these issues head on through industry partnerships and taking advantage of other companies’ technologies, such as it does with CrowdStrike Holding Inc.’s Falcon solution.

Since data creates value for organizations, it can rightfully be considered an asset, likened to a financial instrument. Moreover, it is key to understanding and protecting risk and value as a whole, Parker added.

“We have an IT stack that looks very different from what it looked like 15 years ago. It’s not just a question of an asset being a device with an IP on the network,” he said. “A single IP address could be hundreds of microservices. The complexity has just exploded in compute environments. Because of that, you need a modern approach to inventory your assets, to understand the assets and to have a high level of assurance that you have the correct security controls, such as the presence or lack thereof of a technology such as CrowdStrike Falcon.”

Making data more relevant through proper presentation

Hubble uses a multi-tiered approach to simplify data and data presentation through graph technology and visualization. Such an approach facilitates understanding but also prepares the data for artificial intelligence integration to combine the expressiveness of a knowledge graph with the query flexibility of SQL.

Security professionals are empowered by knowledge graphs as they improve the evaluation of risks, identification of vulnerabilities and the proactive safeguarding of assets, according to Parker. This ensures that organizations can maintain safety and resilience.

“We feel that long term this is actually a capability that the entire organization, the entire enterprise can benefit from, not just cyber. We shouldn’t be selfish with our asset data,” Parker said. “We have an increasing number of CIOs at our customers saying, ‘Hey, why does security have better data now than we do?’ We really do want to move the needle not just in security as a cyber asset capability, but as an enterprise-wide play.”
