HCLTech and VMware tackle cloud chaos using a CloudSMART approach

With nearly 70% of organizations struggling with multicloud complexity, cloud chaos has become a major headache that requires an out-of-the-box approach.

Given that the cloud is the new norm, HCL Technologies Ltd. and VMware Inc. came up with a well-planned and strategic approach to multicloud and digital transformation meant to tame cloud chaos called CloudSMART, according to Monty Bhatia (pictured, right), vice president of global systems integrators at VMware.

“You have all these multiple clouds and people are managing that, and it just became a chaotic environment for them …that’s really what cloud chaos was,” Bhatia stated. “Working with partners like HCL and working with VMware, we’ve created this CloudSMART approach. We’ve figured out a way where we’re trying to help our customers get a better handle on this chaotic nature of how their applications are run in the cloud. That’s really what cloud chaos is all about.”

Bhatia and Anand Swamy (left), cloud and digital transformation leader at HCLTech, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and Rob Strechay at VMware Explore 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed why the CloudSMART strategy by HCLTech and VMware is a game-changer when addressing the cloud chaos challenge. (* Disclosure below.)

CloudSMART is outcome-based

Since CloudSMART offers strategic advantages, such as visibility and cloud spend, application innovation and data management, it is outcome-based, according to Swamy. As a result, business productivity is enhanced.

“The biggest challenge that most of the organizations have today is where should these workloads run?” he asked. “Multicloud, multiple, public cloud, you have private cloud, you have on-prem data centers, you have edge locations. Are you trying to drive business agility? Are you going to increase just the velocity of things? That’s when we came up with the CloudSMART strategy.”

To avoid cloud chaos, it is paramount for enterprises to ask themselves why are they starting the cloud journey? As a result, the CloudSMART strategy lays significant emphasis on three primary areas, namely people, process and product, Swamy pointed out.

“The strategy was primarily focused on three things, product, process, people,” he said. “About 18 months back, what we did was we created a VMware-dedicated ecosystem. So HCL, VMware created the ecosystem, but we wanted to focus on how do we take the whole VMware stack across the board. Look at it holistically to drive a transformation for our customers.”
