Assessing the power of AI and the future of data: theCUBE analysts weigh in

This week’s “Possible 2023” event unveiled the seismic shift happening in enterprise tech — an era where artificial intelligence is poised to redefine work, reshape personal lives and overhaul industries.

Teradata Corp., a company with a 40-year legacy, is not just keeping pace with AI, but leading the charge into a future where data reigns supreme. The event showcased the company’s dedication to innovation and addressed the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.

“This is not their first time at the rodeo with AI,” said Rebecca Knight (pictured, right), theCUBE analyst. “They’ve been working in this for quite some time now. And, yes, it’s now become part of the national dialogue with the introduction of ChatGPT and Bard and all the others, so we’re sort of just catching up to what they’ve been doing for quite some time now.”

Knight spoke with fellow analyst Rob Strechay (left) for an insight panel at Possible 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the profound impact of AI on the present and future of various industries and Teradata’s role in shaping it. (* Disclosure below.)

Embracing innovation: Teradata’s evolution in the era of AI

With the world in the midst of an AI-driven era, AI has taken center stage. As a part of this evolution, Teradata has challenged the perception that it was merely an old-school solution for retailers and healthcare, according to Knight.

Teradata has actively embraced innovation, with its team collaborating closely with Microsoft Corp. and Amazon Web Services Inc. and has actively participated in AI projects, including Ask.AI, which was done in conjunction with Microsoft and OpenAI. It is evident that Teradata has been working on AI long before it became a national buzzword, according to theCUBE analysts.

“Just the ideas that we’ve heard bandied around at this table, but also on the main stage, of how companies are leveraging AI for everyday tasks,” Knight said. “Then also to really revolutionize their businesses and even their entire industry. It’s really exciting, and yet there is a lot of skepticism, fear, anxiety when it comes to it.”

Enhancing productivity and addressing challenges in the AI-driven era

Issues such as data security, privacy and the cost of AI implementation were also discussed. Data security, in particular, is critical but often overlooked, according to Strechay.

“I think another piece of it that people overlook is really the cost or the efficiency aspect of it,” he said. “And the fact that Teradata has been putting their software really focused in a server so that it’s easy to scale out … for years and years or decades, for that matter, before you get to cloud … being able to use cloud resources extremely efficiently is key because we all know those models.”

AI has the potential to take on tedious tasks, freeing up human resources to focus on more value-added activities. This shift toward enhancing productivity is seen as a means to boost job satisfaction, increase retention rates and drive innovation.

“When we started talking about that organization, the data organization and how they’re building data products, and I think leaning into that, that treating data as a product … I think that’s a really neat place for them to be,” Strechay added.
