AI-infused automation meets healthcare to improve patient care and solve clinician burnout

Automation is assuming a deeper role in healthcare.

Through its centralized model, Mayo Clinic has tapped UiPath Inc. to leverage automation to reduce administrative work, allocate specialized tasks to humans and optimize areas where expertise matters most.

“The model itself is essentially a robust series of vetting to ensure that we maximize our abilities with our investments [and] our strategic partners … are we using the systems that we invest in to the best of our abilities?” asked Jared Staal (pictured, right), senior director of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence at the Mayo Clinic. “If not, when we see those gaps, where can we fill those gaps with augmented workflows [and] AI layered in to help that decision-making process?”

Staal and Jason Warrelmann (left), vice president of global services and process industries and global director of healthcare and life sciences at UiPath, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and Dave Vellante at the UiPath FORWARD event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the clinic leaning on AI and automation to relieve the pressure on professionals while unclogging the healthcare delivery process. (* Disclosure below.)

The changing face of automation in healthcare

There’s been a big shift in healthcare automation. Initially, it was about plugging gaps and optimizing costs, especially in the back office.

Automation is now a part of the core mission of care, and healthcare organizations are adopting it at an enterprise level, according to Warrelmann. It’s being used to rethink clinical workers’ roles and alleviate the administrative work they undertake.

“Now we’re seeing automation becoming a part of enterprise programs,” he explained. “Not just the technical program, but also the way they deliver business, the way they transform. I don’t think it’s a secret of the impact the world has had on our clinical staff, and now they’re rethinking the way that clinical workers come to work, the work that they do, the administrative work that they do.”
