Netlify launches Composable Web Platform to simplify modern enterprise web architecture
Netlify Inc., the maker of a cloud-based platform that simplifies the development of web-based applications and webpages, today announced the launch of its Composable Web Platform for the enterprise that will allow customers to quickly build their own web applications with any components.
As more enterprise businesses look to build web-based applications, developers often find themselves looking at different ways to approach the development process. To make that process easier, businesses often use monolithic web architectures that come out of the box with everything they need, but they bundle together the web user interface and business logic.
Co-founder and Chief Executive Matt Biilmann told SiliconANGLE in an interview that this paradigm is outdated and doesn’t scale very well with customer demand.
“At first it was a question of building or buying,” explained Biilmann. “People are realizing now that if you want to differentiate your brand, or you want to stand out, you can’t do that by buying an off-the-shelf experience and hoping that will differentiate you. You have to go back to building a digital experience. You also don’t want to go back to building everything.”
This is where composability comes into play. The promise of composability means that a business can pick and choose what components they want and purchase those and then allow their developers to build their website or web-based application around them. This allows the business and the developers to escape from an out-of-the-box solution that may be extensible, but not quite extensible enough, and gives them a lot more flexibility.
The Composable Web Platform provides everything enterprise developers need to start their projects by unifying content, data sources, code and infrastructure. It begins with Netlify Core, the platform itself, which is where the assets connect and can be orchestrated that allow developers to build and deploy websites, e-commerce stores and web applications. It also handles updating and rebuilding assets only when required.
With Netlify Connect developers can easily bring all content sources together into one place, including content management systems such as WordPress, Drupal or Wix. It gives development teams the ability to manage how and where content is served to all of the front-end assets. A new private software development kit will allow any company to create a connector that can be used to bring data into Netlify. Biilmann said the company also plans to provide two-way communication in the future, allowing apps to edit data through connectors as well.
Finally, there’s Netlify Create, which abstracts away the underlying components so that business users who need to make changes to content can easily make modifications to the website or web application without needing to reach out to developers. It provides a visual editing experience that nondevelopers can enter into and make content modifications affect the underlying assets. That’s something that ordinarily would require a ticket sent to the development team in order to make a change.
As for the future of Netlify and the Web Composability Platform, Biilmann said governance and orchestration could be built into the solution.
“We’re also seeing a lot of opportunities in the Create space to act as a place for oversight and governance for how your content should behave,” said Biilmann. “Because some of the things that will really take shape with this generative AI revolution are more and more personalized content and on-the-fly generated content, such as journeys that are personalized to you. All of that requires that people responsible for it can play around with it and see it before its released.”
