With generative artificial intelligence being the current inflection point, telcos are not being left out in the quest to operate at scale.
Having worked with telcos for more than 10 years, Amazon Web Services Inc. is helping them with the current gen AI transition so they can enjoy benefits, such as increased revenues and enhanced querying processes, according to Chivas Nambiar (pictured), general manager for the Telco Business Unit at AWS.
“Generative AI has been in the news for a while now, but telcos are starting to figure out how to use it, and for that they needed access to some key capabilities, like protecting the data,” he said. “How do you put the right kind of agent infrastructure to be able to use something like Bedrock? The Bedrock set of announcements were interesting for our telcos. The Nvidia announcement obviously has been huge. We are in the demo lounge here talking with Cox about how Cox is using generative AI to go look at and query their network footprint and come back and say, ‘Where’s the challenge we have?’”
Nambiar spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier and Dave Vellante at the “Supercloud 5: The Battle for AI Supremacy” event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how generative AI has become a huge disruptor and the way AWS helps telcos ride this wave effectively. (* Disclosure below.)
Since gen AI will be the accelerant that is going to impact developers and the way data is collected, organized and served up, telcos are jumping on the bandwagon. As a result, AWS is helping telcos look at this cutting-edge technology from a developer standpoint, according to Nambiar.
“How does generative AI have an impact?” he asked. “It’s not just a generative AI story. It’s AI and data. I think they’re moving faster than you think. We’ve had videos that we put up at a couple of the talks we did, where customers have come out and said that they’re working on a connected customer journey with an Amdocs company, and that shows that it is with Bedrock and with Amdocs that there is actually a solution that has been deployed.”
By providing the right security and data privacy models, AWS is helping telcos with their generative AI journeys. AWS also uses its independent software vendor strong point in this transformation, Nambiar pointed out.
“There’s also like a whole ISV side of the story,” he said. “A lot of the tech inside telcos is ISV dependent. We’re working with those partners to help them transform. We talk about adjacencies things, like a telco starting to get into the smart home market. How do we help you with that? And across all of these, we have to provide the right developer experience.”
Rethinking the data management model is part of the game for telcos. As a result, the conversation changes to how a telco can improve itself in specific areas, such as its customer journeys and revenue and growth stories, and this is where AWS also fits in, according to Nambiar.
“If you think about what telcos really need, it is the built-in security and the privacy of that data across the entire stack … we provide a developer experience that allows them to take advantage of this — and it’s all inbuilt,” he said. “What we are seeing is telcos are starting to work with us to say, ‘If I want to provide global infrastructure and I’m not a global player, how do I do that with something like Cloud WAN and use the AWS backbone to scale out?”
