Navigating the AI hype cycle: The role of data in achieving AI supremacy

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence technology, possessing high-quality data isn’t just beneficial — it’s the key to unlocking prosperity.

AI, with its ever-improving capabilities, is poised to revolutionize the way we interact with technology, ushering in a new era of innovation and efficiency, according to Stu Miniman (pictured), senior director of market insights of hybrid platforms at Red Hat Inc.

“AI is not a monolithic application,” he said. “It’s where am I going to train my data? I need to train it, I need compute, I need my GPUs and all this. We’ve got products up on the International Space Station, satellites, drones, remote sites. And our hybrid strategy, we’ve been talking about data. AI’s the killer use case for this kind of stuff. AI is a hype cycle. There’s a lot of hype, but this is real.”

Miniman spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Furrier at the “Supercloud 5: The Battle for AI Supremacy” event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed why AI is a formidable force that will augment human capability.

Data is at the epicenter of AI

Data is crucial in the realm of AI, as it’s the deciding factor between success and failure. Given AI’s far-reaching impact across various sectors and its influence on nearly everyone, the importance of data in this context can’t be overlooked, according to Miniman.

“This will impact the next generation of workers and impact everything that we’re doing, and it’s why Adam [Selipsky’s] keynote they spent 15 minutes to get to it and then spent two hours talking all AI, and I thought he had a really solid keynote,” he said. “Amazon will win a lot of that business. Microsoft is doing well in that space but also data center. The other piece, where’s the data transacting; it’s at the edge — AI, you know, my family members can play with this.”

AI is taking the web trajectory because it is going into every environment on the consumer side. For instance, AI will be the differentiator between the last million cloud users and the next ones, Miniman pointed out.

AI is following a similar expansion path as the internet, increasingly integrating into various aspects of the consumer environment. AI’s influence will be a key factor distinguishing the experiences of current cloud users from those of future users, Miniman explained.

“We are talking with every customer about AI,” he said. “It is part of their overall strategy; there are some customers that are already training models and doing everything they have, but it is early days,” he noted. “It’s going into the Apple and Google stores, into everybody’s phone. Our kids are playing with some of this kind of stuff. It impacts everyone, but from an enterprise customer, we’re early, there’s some early returns.”

The partnership between Red Hat and Amazon Web Services Inc. is focused on leveraging AI in the same transformative way telemetry was used. This collaboration aims to achieve this and other objectives, emphasizing a customer-centric approach.

“We’ve got a phenomenal partnership with AWS,” Miniman said. “AWS has hundreds of services. We actually jointly developed the Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS — three years, hundreds of customers, SaaS customers, financial customers, that’s a phenomenal thing. It’s really good to be here, work with our joint customers and be part of all the excitement around AI too.”
