Data security solution startup Metomic Ltd. today announced the launch of Metomic for ChatGPT, a new service that offers information technology and security leaders full visibility into what sensitive data is being uploaded to OpenAI LP’s ChatGPT platform.

Offered as a browser plugin, the new service has been designed to allow businesses to take full advantage of the generative artificial intelligence solution without jeopardizing their company’s most sensitive data.

Metomic argues that while ChatGPT has exploded in popularity, serious concerns exist about employees inadvertently putting vulnerable company information at risk by uploading sensitive data to ChatGPT. The company cites studies highlighting a 60% increase in the uploading of sensitive data to ChatGPT by employees, underscoring the risk to vulnerable company information.

Metomic for ChatGPT seeks to address the issue by identifying when an employee logs into the ChatGPT platform and scans any uploaded data in real time. It also identifies critical risks in ChatGPT conversations and offers contextual previews of sensitive data uploaded to the platform.

The service alerts security teams if employees upload sensitive data, such as personally identifiable information, security credentials and intellectual property. The browser extension has 150 prebuilt data classifiers that recognize common critical data risks and also allows businesses to create customized data classifiers to identify their most vulnerable information.

Metomic for ChatGPT is available to any customer that has implemented the company’s data security platform.

The venture capital-backed startup last raised $20 million in funding in February 2022. Investors include Evolution Equity Partners LLC, Resonance Ltd. and Connect Ventures Management LLP.
