Google enhances cybersecurity defenses with AI-driven innovations at GCP Next

Google LLC made a range of cybersecurity-related product announcements at its Google Cloud Next conference today, focusing on protecting people, data and critical assets.

The new releases span artificial intelligence-driven security operations enhancements, advanced threat intelligence tools, cloud risk management solutions and data and network security capabilities. In Google’s words, “We are announcing innovations across our security portfolio that are designed to deliver stronger security outcomes and enable every organization to make Google a part of their security team.”

Leading the list are enhancements to Google Gemini, Google’s generative AI model, in security operations. The Gemini enhancements include a new assisted investigation feature for Google Chronicle, the company’s cloud-based security information event management platform, that improves investigative workflows through AI recommendations. Set to be generally available by the end of the month, the feature streamlines analysts’ tasks by guiding actions and automating searches and rule creation.

“We are now adding Gemini in Security Operations to Chronicle to elevate the skills of security teams and boost their productivity, allowing them to more easily detect, investigate and respond to threats,” Sunil Potti, vice president and general manager of cloud security at Google Cloud, said in a statement. “A new assisted investigation feature, generally available at the end of this month, converts natural language to new detections, summarizes event data, recommends actions to take and navigates users through the platform via conversational chat.”

Gemini in Threat Intelligence and Security Command Center features have also been enhanced with conversational search capabilities that tap into the Mandiant threat intelligence database and the Security Command Center to deliver intuitive threat investigation and risk management practices.

AI is a regular theme throughout the announcements, with Google Cloud Security Services also getting an AI infusion through tools such as IAM Recommendations and Confidential Computing Insights. The tool leverages AI to refine access controls and suggest protective measures for sensitive workloads.

On the browser front, Google also announced Chrome Enterprise Premium, a new service that enhances endpoint security through features that include threat protection, zero-trust access controls and data loss prevention. Chrome Enterprise Premium is generally available starting today.

Google Security Operations has been given applied threat intelligence, a feature that applies Google’s global threat intelligence directly to customer environments, aiding in the proactive identification and mitigation of threats.

A new feature available today, called Security Command Center Enterprise, fuses proactive cloud security and enterprise security operations. Doing so gives security teams a single view of their posture controls, active threats, cloud identities and data while integrating remediation and issue accountability into end-to-end workflows.

Other new features across Google’s Security Framework include updates to Privileged Access Manager and Principal Access Boundary for IAM, Cloud NGFW Enterprise for network security, and expanded options for data security through Confidential VMs and Sensitive Data Protection integration with Cloud SQL.
