SlashNext unveils AI service to tackle increasing spam and ‘graymail’

Phishing protection company SlashNext Inc. today announced the launch of an artificial intelligence-powered spam and “graymail” service that reduces unwanted emails and improves user productivity.

Called SlashNext GenAI for Spam and Graymail, the new service is claimed to be the industry’s first generative AI large language model to deliver accuracy and precision with near-zero false positive rates. The service uses a set of unique AI classifiers trained to identify different categories of spam and unwanted graymail, which includes marketing ads, sales outreach, newsletters and announcements, to reduce threats embedded in these types of emails and drive productivity gains for users and security operations center teams.

The issue the new service is seeking to address is a real one: the rise of malicious phishing emails in the age of artificial intelligence. In October, a report from the SlashNext Threat Labs team found that malicious phishing attacks had jumped 1,265% in the 12 months to the end of September last year and much of that increase is due to the availability of tools such as ChatGPT.

SlashNext argues that the availability of generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT is allowing cybercriminals to launch sophisticated email-based attacks more quickly and in greater volume than ever. As a result, spam and graymail volumes have increased, amplifying the burden placed on SOC teams left to manage the influx of emails reported by users for investigation.

GenAI for Spam and Graymail improves user productivity by keeping inboxes clean and free of spam and unsolicited emails that employees could report to their SOC teams for investigation. By reducing the number of reports by filtering dubious emails before they hit inboxes, SOC teams receive fewer alerts and investigation requests.

For chief information security officers and other senior staff, the new service also offers an executive dashboard and executive summary report that demonstrates the value of GenAI for Spam and Graymail. The dashboard and reporting capabilities provide clear insights into the value delivered by showcasing metrics such as “User Productivity Hours Saved” and “SOC Analysts Time Saved.”

“In 2023, we launched the industry’s first generative AI solution for business email compromise to thwart advanced supply chain, executive impersonation, financial fraud and other socially engineered attacks,” said Chief Executive Patrick Harr. “We are extending this same generative AI capability to detect and block unsolicited spam and graymail, further reducing risk and enhancing the productivity of both individual users and SOC teams.”
