Dell homes in on sustainability efforts with AI models
Since debuting Project Helix last year, Dell Technologies Inc.’s artificial intelligence journey has grown to encompass a vast array of on-premises and cloud solutions for AI models.
Now the company is looking to provide greater access.
“The time to get started with AI and gen AI is here and now, and it just creates endless possibilities in terms of technology advancing human progress, which is why we exist,” said JJ Davis (pictured), senior vice president of corporate affairs at Dell. “I can’t really think of any greater purpose on earth than to help the world transform digitally to deliver more opportunity to more people.”
Davis spoke with theCUBE’s Dave Vellante and Savannah Peterson at Dell Technologies World, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Dell’s commitment to sustainability and keeping AI equitable. (* Disclosure below.)
Keeping AI models green
Large language models require a huge amount of energy, so finding the resources to power AI while staying environmentally friendly has been difficult for companies. Dell remains committed to finding sustainable solutions through its Environmental, Social and Governance initiative, according to Davis.
“We formed our ESG function over three years ago,” she said. “We evolved from thinking about it as social impact or corporate social responsibility to really a business imperative in how you drive ESG across the entire enterprise to better serve customers, because they’re trying to meet their own sustainability and climate goals and they need our help.”
Dell is also focused on being socially conscious with AI, which has the potential to widen the digital divide. The key to solving complex environmental and social issues is continuing to work on creative solutions, Davis believes.
“When we think about AI and where policymakers need to focus, it’s got to be around innovation,” she said. “We’ve got to make sure that we’re accessing all forms of sustainable energy or lower carbon energy like nuclear or hydro. It’s not just wind and solar. All of that’s going to have to come together to make sure that we can power this greatest … technological revolution of our lifetime.”
