Ann Maya, EMEA chief technology officer of Boomi, and Jaime Ryan , vice president of product management at Boomi discuss Boomi's API management strategy with theCUBE at Boomi World 2024 AI

Boomi focused on API management amid rising AI and cybersecurity needs

Application programming interfaces have been proliferating across the internet over the past several years, and Boomi LP looks to build upon its history as an integration-platform-as-a-service company to help customers with API management.

“If we look at what iPaaS has been doing, it’s been able to connect systems and applications and data at every endpoint, and that’s been absolutely critical,” said Ann Maya (pictured left), EMEA chief technology officer of Boomi, “Now, we’ve got this force factor coming from AI … you peel everything back, you’re going to still have APIs. And that is something that will be fundamental and grow astronomically over time. So there needs to be a practical way of managing it.”

Maya and Jaime Ryan (pictured right), vice president of product management at Boomi, spoke with theCUBE Research’s John Furrier and Savannah Peterson at Boomi World, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Boomi’s entry into API management and the future of integration. (* Disclosure below.)

Boomi’s Ann Maya talks about how the company is meeting customer demands in API management.

Easing the complexity of API management

Boomi recently acquired assets from APIIDA AG and Cloud Software Group Inc. to enhance its API management tools. The company has also incorporated artificial intelligence agents to help with integration tasks and more exciting updates are on the horizon, according to Ryan.

“Everything you expect from traditional API management, we’ll be able to deliver. We’ll also be able to deliver the governance and federation that the few can at this point and that people need,” he said, “The fact that we have a vision that includes integration and APIs and data and AI really accounts for all of the different ways that any of our customers [are] going to be pulled.”

A lot of Boomi’s success with API management on its platform has come from listening to its customers, according to Maya. The company’s current API tools were created in response to customer feedback.

“A lot of our customers needed APIs and API management and they didn’t want to buy this big heavy solution in order to deliver it. So they started driving our development of that solution,” she said. “With API management, the very pragmatic approach of don’t overladen it with a bunch of administrative layers, do what you need to do to kind of get the job done … has been an amazing approach for us.”

The drive to implement AI models means that data and AI management is especially crucial for customers. Another key point is cybersecurity, which has grown increasingly complex in the age of AI and APIs.

“We knew that we needed to be able to grow and scale with our customers, especially as AI and other things have driven the adoption of APIs really sky-high,” Ryan said. “[We’re] providing the security that they need and the governance that they need … and really expanding the horizons of the API program.”

Boomi’s history as an integration platform puts the company in a particularly strong position for the next era of AI-based applications. It is now focused on expanding its foundational services into a comprehensive platform for customers.

“When you’re in the position that we are in the iPaaS space, we’re able to see what our customers are doing and our partners are doing. It’s a brilliant vantage point. So we’re able to see that convergence happening and respond to it before a lot of other vendors can. So we’re at a pretty good advantage,” Maya said.
