AWS’ AI and sustainability push: theCUBE’s analysis from AWS Summit New York

Companies have moved beyond merely exploring artificial intelligence; they’re implementing it in practical applications, advancing from trial phases to full-scale production. This rapid shift has placed sustainable AI at the forefront of innovation and transformation.

This change isn’t just about the technology itself, but about building infrastructure that supports the next generation of AI-driven solutions. As sustainability and efficient resource management become more critical, Amazon Web Services Inc. and other industry leaders are setting ambitious clean energy goals. The integration of diverse tools and the expansion of partner ecosystems are key, allowing businesses to maximize AI’s potential while ensuring flexibility and security.

John Furrier, executive analyst at theCUBE Research, and Rob Strechay, managing director and principal analyst at theCUBE Research, talk about AWS and sustainable AI at AWS Summit NY 2024.

“I think budget always jumps up before things like sustainability, and others really tie in because people are definitely concerned about the sustainability of GPUs and all of this,” said Rob Strechay (pictured, left), managing director and principal analyst at theCUBE Research. “I think they will look to, ‘Hey, if I’m going to train my model or fine tune it, I want to do it at scale cost reduce. But then when I want to deploy it, I’m going to deploy it,’ inference out to the edge because milliseconds or microseconds actually count.”

Strechay spoke with John Furrier (right), executive analyst at theCUBE Research, at AWS Summit New York, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed AWS’ strategies focusing on sustainable AI, innovation in AI deployment through services such as Bedrock and Q, and the company’s commitment to clean energy and strong partner ecosystems.

Advancing AI with Bedrock and Q: Simplifying deployment and integration

AI continues to be a significant focus for AWS. Amazon Bedrock and Q, two AI-related services that are being enhanced with more models and partner integrations, are just two examples of the company’s efforts in this area. Bedrock aims to simplify AI model deployment, while Q facilitates seamless data integration and usage for both business and developer applications.

“Integration and creating distributed computing environment is what everyone’s talking about, but no one’s covering it,” Furrier said. “I think the Partner program is a secret weapon for AWS right now. I think they got the Marketplace reorged with the Amazon Partner Network — that is a competitive differentiator … advantage for Amazon.”

AWS’ overarching strategy revolves around returning to its ‘Day One’ philosophy, which focuses on relentless innovation and agility. This approach, championed by leaders such as Andy Jassy and Jeff Bezos, aims to maintain a startup-like mentality even as the company grows, according to Furrier

“Gen AI feels like a day one moment for them,” he said. “With Matt Garman as the new CEO … you start to see the vibe changing. I can tell you right now, I could see significant changes.”

Sustainable AI: AWS’ strategy for continued growth

Sustainability is another area where AWS has made significant strides, especially in the area of sustainable AI. The company has achieved its goal of 100% clean energy by 2023, seven years ahead of schedule. This accomplishment sets Amazon apart from competitors such as Google LLC, which has struggled with its carbon footprint. By prioritizing sustainability, AWS not only enhances its corporate responsibility, but also strengthens its market position as a leader in green technology.

“When you start to have an understanding of … where they’re going with agents and how they’re looking into the future of where AI is going, I think that what Amazon has set up really well to do is maybe not chase a market per se as they used to do,” Strechay said.

Looking ahead, AWS is poised to leverage generative AI to revolutionize network compute and storage. The applications of AI are expected to drive significant changes in infrastructure, creating new opportunities for data management and resource allocation. As AI continues to evolve, AWS aims to be the “Switzerland of AI,” providing a neutral and secure platform for diverse AI applications.

“What’s really interesting is that AWS has all the parts pieces to be that Switzerland of AI,” Strechay said. “When you start to look at how they bring it together, I think there’s some work to do.  When you start to look at how all of this different services were brought to birth and how they got out and how they go to market, I think there’s a lot of work to be done to really make it the easy button for organizations with AI.”
