RunSafe Security raises $12M to drive global expansion and product development

Cybersecurity company RunSafe Security Inc. announced today that it has raised $12 million in new funding to accelerate product development and expansion to Europe, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific region.

Founded in 2015, RunSafe specializes in protecting embedded systems and software through a cyber-hardening process that disrupts attacks by reducing vulnerabilities and eliminating potential attack vectors in software.

The company’s flagship product, Alkemist, immunizes applications from cyberthreats by automatically hardening software binaries, protecting embedded systems and mitigating potential exploits. The approach minimizes attack surfaces by neutralizing memory corruption errors, buffer overflows and other common vulnerabilities with the aim of making it more challenging for attackers to compromise critical systems.

RunSafe’s technology revolves around load-time function randomization, a feature that alters the memory layout of software each time it’s loaded. In doing so, LFR makes it difficult for attackers to predict how to exploit vulnerabilities, particularly those related to memory corruption, which are exploited in a significant portion of security breaches. In randomizing function locations, RunSafe claims that its solutions can prevent over 70% of vulnerabilities from being exploited.

The advantages of RunSafe’s solutions, along with hardening software and randomizing memory layouts, include automating vulnerability management and lightening the load on development teams. The service also seamlessly integrates into workflows without impacting performance or requiring code changes.

Notable customers using RunSafe’s service include GE Aviation Systems LLC, Lockheed Martin Corp., Scheider Electric SE and various arms of U.S. defense forces, including the Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and Space Force.

The Series B round was led by Critical Ventures and SineWave Venture Partners, with BMW i Ventures GmbH, Working Lab Capital, Lockheed Martin Ventures, HyperLink Ventures, Iron Gate Ventures, Alsop Louie Partners LP and NextGen Venture Partners also participating.

“RunSafe is leading the charge to protect our critical systems from global threats that are infiltrating our infrastructure through memory-based vulnerabilities,” said Heitor Benfeito, managing partner of Critical Ventures. “The company’s unique approach to immunizing software fast-tracks protection now, so the focus can be on developers building new features.”
