SurrealDB’s Surreal Cloud debuts on AWS S3 for scalable multimodel database as a service

Open-source database startup SurrealDB Inc. today announced the launch of Surreal Cloud, a database-as-a-service offering that gives enterprises access to a fully managed solution.

It’s for developers who want to leverage the power and flexibility of SurrealDB without the complexities of managing infrastructure. Available on Amazon Web Services Inc.’s S3 platform, Surreal Cloud integrates with the Surrealist graphical user interface and features Surreal Sidekick, a new personal artificial intelligence assistant.

SurrealDB offers a multimodel database that has the features of multiple data models and databases built into a single product that uses a single query language. Using SurrealDB allows users to replace 10 or more products and services with its one multimodel database, removing much of the complexity for developers so they can focus on building great applications.

With the new Surreal Cloud, developers get the same functionality as offered by SurrealDB in a fully managed S3-backed environment. SurrealDB claims the offering delivers the best price-performance for any workload and automated data lifecycle management that can store massive amounts of frequently, infrequently or rarely accessed data cost-efficiently.

The company says the service gives organizations the option of not having to worry about infrastructure operations, monitoring, backups or capacity planning. It offers a flexible and cost-effective solution for large-scale data processing for both transactional and analytical use cases. Enterprises can run computational workloads on data stored in low-cost object storage while dynamically scaling out compute resources.

Features of Surreal Cloud include integration with Surrealist, a graphical user interface that simplifies database management for developers. Surrealist enables intuitive tasks such as query execution, schema design and connection management, which enhance database performance for both beginner and enterprise users through a unified interface.

Additionally, Surreal Cloud introduces Surreal Sidekick, an AI assistant designed to assist with application development and database queries. By accessing a library of documentation, Surreal Sidekick provides on-demand answers that streamline the development process and empower developers to focus on building innovative solutions.

Other benefits of Surreal Cloud include scalability that allows databases and applications to grow from prototype to enterprise scale while dynamically adapting to changing workloads. It also offers atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability, or ACID, compliance for reliable, complex transactions and workload isolation, allowing organizations to efficiently compartmentalize projects without the need for redundant data marts or costly extract/transform/load processes.

“With Surreal Cloud, we give developers and enterprises the ability to build innovative applications while we take the burden of database complexity away by handling the underlying infrastructure,” said co-founder and Chief Executive Morgan Hitchcock.

SurrealDB is a venture capital-backed startup that has raised $26 million in funding over two rounds, including $20 million in June. Investors in the company include FirstMark Capital, Georgian Partners Inc., Crew Capital Management and Alumni Ventures Group.
