Veeam Threat Hunter marks a shift from reactive to proactive security, combining prevention and recovery to support modern cybersecurity strategies, according to Rick Vanover (pictured, left), vice president of product strategy at Veeam Software Group GmbH. The solution delivers real-time threat intelligence by continuously monitoring backup data and the systems connected to it, he added.

Veeam’s Rick Vanover and Emilee Tallez talk to theCUBE about the transformative impact of Veeam Threat Hunter.
“If I look at what Veeam has brought to market, there are a couple of things I want to highlight,” Vanover said. “One is a technology that we have called Veeam Threat Hunter, and that is an iteration of something we’ve had for a long time. The thought is we are this incredible copy of the data, and the best part is, it’s not something that can interfere with production when organizations are running their workloads. We can actually connect the worlds of this incredible copy of data.”
Vanover and Emilee Tallez (right), field chief technology officer at Veeam, spoke with theCUBE’s Christophe Bertrand at the RSAC 2025 Conference, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Veeam Threat Hunter tames cybersecurity risks. (* Disclosure below.)
The link between Veeam Threat Hunter and cyber resilience lies in data protection and proactive threat detection. The solution supports cyber resilience by using a signature-based scan engine to detect malware, ransomware, and other anomalies in backup data, according to Vanover.
“I recommend to people all the time to take the backups with Veeam and then run a Veeam Threat Hunter scan right after that,” he said. “This is something that’s optimized for our use case. It is signature-based. If you talk to any incident response individual or some of the advanced threats, signatures aren’t the end-all be-all, but at least it’s a very important additional data point.”
Artificial intelligence enhances cyber resilience by improving risk management, threat detection and adaptive learning. Veeam has taken its first step in this direction with the launch of Veeam Guardian, according to Vanover.
“I’ll be the first to say, what I do not want to do is do AI washing,” he said. “I want the world to know that Veeam is taking a very practical, user benefit-first approach to AI. We announced a part of our vision, and it was showcased last week at VeeamON. [It’s] called Veeam Guardian. It’s solving one of those big problems with AI … being explainable and justifiable [so] that you can map it to the business. This is just one example of being able to talk to your data.”
A robust partner ecosystem is essential in cyber resilience because it strengthens an organization’s ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from cyber threats. Veeam is prioritizing partnerships for this very reason, according to Tallez.
“Every organization out there, they’re all taking the same approach, it’s defense in depth,” she said. “What Veeam wanted to do is make sure that customers that have already made those large investments into companies like CrowdStrike, Palo Alto, Splunk, et cetera, keep that investment [and] leverage the tool, but be able to bring data protection along with it. Veeam’s focused on building out the security ecosystem. We currently partner with over 65 security vendors, and we’re constantly adding more.”
