Safe Software adds data virtualization and augmented reality to FME Platform to boost enterprise integration

Data integration company Safe Software Inc. today announced two major additions to its FME Platform that are aimed at bringing easier data access and spatial intelligence to the forefront of enterprise operations.

Announced at the company’s Peak of Data and AI 2025 conference in Seattle, the new features, FME Data Virtualization and FME Realize, mark a significant expansion of Safe’s vision for an all-data, any-artificial intelligence integration ecosystem.

The first announcement, FME Data Virtualization, allows users to expose secure, OpenAPI-compliant REST application programming interfaces directly from integration workflows without the need to write custom code or deploy new infrastructure. The feature is designed to simplify data sharing and API creation across internal and external systems, allowing data engineers and developers to deliver real-time access to enterprise data in a fully governed environment.

Differing from traditional approaches that rely on middleware or external API gateways, FME Data Virtualization has been built directly into the FME no-code integration environment to allow users to turn complex workflows into queryable endpoints. The result makes enterprise data instantly usable by custom applications, partner portals or even AI agents.

“FME Data Virtualization allows organizations to expose secure APIs on top of their existing systems, without needing to replicate data or manage new infrastructure,” said co-founder and Chief Executive Don Murray. “This isn’t just about speed, it’s about putting power and control in the hands of data teams, developers and architects.”

The feature includes built-in support for authentication, fine-grained permissions, intelligent caching and both synchronous and asynchronous endpoints for flexibility and security. Enterprises can expose live data from spatial systems, internet of things networks, or cloud services, without compromising governance or performance.

Safe Software has also debuted FME Realize, an augmented reality solution designed to bridge the gap between digital twins and the physical world. Offered at no cost to all FME Flow customers, FME Realize allows field teams to visualize, update and interact with real-time enterprise data through spatial computing interfaces, directly from iOS devices.

FME Realize brings spatial computing to field operations by allowing users to interact with 3D models and digital infrastructure in augmented reality. The feature has been designed for utility workers, civil engineers and field surveyors to virtualize up-to-date infrastructure assets such as pipelines and electrical networks, overlaid in real-world environments.

“FME Realize is a first-of-its-kind solution that brings the power of all data to the field, where up-to-date access matters most,” said Murray. “Users can interact with any data, including digital twins, to take action and make smarter decisions on-site, in real time.”

Safe said the launch of FME Data Virtualization and FME Realize is part of its strategy to position FME as the central hub for enterprise data integration and AI enablement. FME currently offers support for more 800 data transformers and thousands of enterprise systems and is used by more than 20,000 organizations worldwide.
