Stockholm-based Tandem Health Ltd., an artificial intelligence-powered startup aiming to ease the administrative burden on doctors and clinicians, announced today that it has raised $50 million in early-stage funding.
The Series A round was led by Kinnevik, with participation from Northzone, Amino Collective and Visionaries Club.
Founded in 2023, Tandem offers an AI-driven copilot that generates clinical notes for doctors as they speak with patients. It can do this when they’re in patient rooms, while they’re performing activities, on the phone, working through their records, or in any other setting.
The objective is to be with them and become an active participant that can organize thoughts and produce accurate, compliant records before any task is complete.
Tandem said it started with clinical documentation because it’s where the burden is felt most across healthcare. However, it said it intends to use the funding to expand its suite of offerings.
The co-pilot currently improves interactions between doctors and their patients. However, the company is in the process of developing what it terms an AI-native operating system for clinicians. This system will integrate across their entire workflow: It will assist with accurately capturing clinical codes, coordinating care, facilitating handoffs and supporting clinical decision-making.
Research on how much time doctors spend on their notes is difficult to The company recently partnered with Accurx Ltd., a British medical communications platform used by the publicly funded healthcare system in the United Kingdom, the National Healthcare Service. Together the two companies launched Accurx Scribe. The new software delivers real-time transcription, coding and document generation for staff using medical AI.
With the partnership, more than 200,000 NHS professionals were brought on board with Tandem’s AI software, making it one of the largest rollouts of healthcare anywhere in the world, the company said.
Data on administrative task ratios for doctors is difficult to come by, but a 2022 study from Nuance Communications Inc. and independent research consultancy Ignetica Ltd. of just under a thousand NHS physicians revealed some patterns. The report showed that clinicians can spend almost 13.5 hours a week, or almost one-third of their time, on administrative documentation tasks. A more recent survey of doctors in Germany in 2024 reported by Mediscape showed that some clinicians were spending twice as long on paperwork as seeing patients.
This burden can lead to depression and burnout among medical staff leading to real effects on job satisfaction and poor outcomes for both employees and patient care.
In its announcement, Tandem said it emerged from and focuses on Europe on purpose. This attention to the NHS and European healthcare systems gives it an important cultural awareness that sets it apart from other companies that might not have the same knowledge of local regulations and clinical culture.
