CircleCI launches Platform Team Toolkit to reduce strain between developer speed and centralized control

Circle Internet Services Inc., which provides a continuous integration and delivery platform for DevOps teams, today announced the release of a new solution that eliminates the need to choose between organizational control and developer speed.

The new tool, named Platform Team Toolkit, allows software development administrators to manage organization-wide work from a single configuration while also allowing teams and individual developers to customize projects when needed.

In essence, it provides a centralized space to host configuration for an organization, while still allowing developers to override that configuration when their projects require it. That means configuration remains organization-wide across workflows, but can still be tailored properly for specific projects.

“Configuration sprawl is the enemy of platform team efficiency,” said Rob Zuber, chief technology officer at CircleCI. “Adding to this, AI is exacerbating this complexity at an unprecedented scale. Our toolkit enables platform teams to eliminate the overhead of manual pipeline management.”

The company said existing DevOps platforms lack flexibility for complex, cross-team pipelines. By adopting this tool’s approach, larger teams that develop extensive or multiple applications can maintain consistency.

DevOps refers to a software development approach that focuses on collaboration between development, who produce and test software, and operations, which deploy and monitor live software. It’s not just a set of tools, but a philosophy and culture that aims to automate the processes of building, testing, delivery and bug fixes by forging a practice of collaboration between development and operations to deliver software faster and more reliably to reduce the production lifecycle.

CircleCI said one Terraform integration will automate project setup, eschewing manual pipeline maintenance by orchestrating it from a centralized playbook. These templates apply across all projects with selective override capabilities and job-level policy enforcement to ensure security standards as well as best practices are followed.

“By providing these capabilities, CircleCI is making complex, cross-team pipelines easier to manage at scale, addressing one of the core operational challenges faced by platform teams by empowering them to achieve both consistency and velocity,” said Jim Mercer, International Data Corp. program vice president of software development for DevOps and DevSecOps.
