NetRise updates platform to help teams prioritize real-world software vulnerabilities

Software supply chain startup NetRise Inc. today announced a major update to its platform aimed at improving how organizations identify and manage vulnerabilities in the software running on devices across global infrastructures.

The update makes users’ time more efficient and effective in prioritizing, mitigating and remediating vulnerabilities found in the software they produce and reducing risk in the environments in which that software runs.

The latest update to the NetRise platform introduces a number of new features, including “Reachability,” which provides context on whether a vulnerability is actually reachable and executable within a given system. Using the feature, security teams can prioritize vulnerabilities based on real-world exploitability, allowing them to focus on those that pose a real threat to the system.

SBOM Edit, another new feature, allows users to manually add, remove or modify components within a Software Bill of Materials. SBOM Edit includes support for inserting metadata such as licensing details that may be stripped during the build process.

The update also introduces Fix Version, a feature that identifies the minimum version of a component where a vulnerability has been resolved. Alongside this, the update includes a platform rearchitecture that boosts scalability and accelerates the delivery of future enhancements.

“Vulnerability management and threat intelligence teams often suffer from and are distracted by noise in the systems they use to protect their enterprise infrastructure,” said founder and Chief Executive Thomas Pace. “The capabilities we’ve announced today allow them to focus on those vulnerabilities that are both accessible on the network and automatically execute at runtime.”

In its Supply Chain Visibility & Risk Study, published late last year, NetRise found that on networking devices whose compiled software NetRise analyzed, an average of 1,102 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures were found per device. The report showed how to prioritize those CVEs to focus on those that were network accessible, greatly reducing the work required of a manufacturer’s development team or of an enterprise’s third-party risk management team.

“Today’s announcement, giving those teams visibility into components that autorun on startup, reduces that work even further,” added Pace. “This allows software developers to remediate the most critical vulnerabilities, reducing the time to deliver secure software.

NetRise was previously in the news in April when it raised $10 million in new funding to accelerate its mission to address the critical security gap in detecting and responding to software supply chain risk. Investors in the company include DNX Ventures, Miramar Digital Ventures, Sorenson Capital Partners LP, Squadra Ventures and Talons Ventures.
