Heidi Health raises $65M to automate administrative tasks for doctors

Melbourne, Australia-based Heidi Health Trading Pty Ltd., a healthcare artificial intelligence startup, today announced it has raised $65 million in early-stage funding to accelerate the development of its AI Care Partner that assists clinicians with administrative work.

Point72 Private Investments led the Series B funding round with participation from existing investors Blackbird, Headline and Latitude, the growth fund of Phoenix Court. Heidi has raised $96.6 million to date, valuing the company at $465 million.

According to a 2024 study from the American Medical Association, 43% of the doctors participating said they experienced at least one symptom of burnout. Contributing to this burnout, many doctors cited time spent on tasks and paperwork outside of work hours. Last year, practitioners spent 27.2 hours on direct patient care per work week and almost that at 13 hours on indirect care, such as order entry, documentation and an additional 7.3 hours on administrative tasks.

Dr. Thomas Kelly, chief executive and co-founder of Heidi, said the company built the AI Care Partner to help relieve this burden.

“It is untenable that healthcare demand continues to rise while clinical time continues to shrink,” Kelly said. “Building a sustainable healthcare system requires expanding clinical capacity without compromising clinician wellbeing or patient safety.”

Heidi’s AI Care Partner works to assist doctors and doctor offices in handling administrative care tasks that otherwise take attention away from direct patient care. It automates work such as documentation, form filing and task management. The AI system can also take phone calls to handle routine check-ins and make follow-up calls to remind patients of upcoming appointments. The system keeps a record of what patients said, so doctors and administrators have a rundown of what was discussed.

Doctors can use the AI system as a partner in their work before consultations by reviewing patient history, notes and results in one place, with key findings front and center. During a consult, it can transcribe visits in over 110 languages, build structured notes and generate referrals and handouts for patients. After a visit, it can compile and send all information to electronic health record systems with one click, automatically generating codes and tasks.

Heidi works in a competitive market filled with startups and companies focused on developing generative AI healthcare systems to alleviate administrative burdens. Rivals include companies such as Qventus Inc., Tandem Health Ltd., Taxo.ai Inc. and Prosper AI Inc. Much of the market has been focused on automating paperwork and intelligently transcribing care visits, with an increasing number aiming also to automate voice tasks such as appointment calls, simple questions over the phone and follow-ups.

The company said tens of thousands of clinicians from over 200 medical specialties have used its platform to lighten administrative overload. In the past 18 months, the platform has supported 73 million consults and now handles more than 2 million consults weekly across 116 countries.

Heidi also announced the appointment of Paul Williamson, previously head of revenue at Plaid Inc., as chief revenue officer, and Dr. Simon Kos, formerly chief medical officer at Microsoft Corp., as Heidi’s CMO.

“With Heidi by their side, clinicians not only improve their experience of delivering care but the patients’ experience of receiving it,” Dr. Kos said. “Heidi’s bold vision extends beyond the current promise of ambient voice technology and into a future where every clinician can leverage AI to expand their clinical capacity.”

Today’s funding announcement follows closely after the company’s $16.6 million Series A round only seven months ago.

With the new funding, Heidi said the company intends to expand its team, office locations and local support across the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, and build on adoption in France, Spain, Germany, Ireland, South Africa and Hong Kong.
