Behavioral health software startup Ease Health launches with $41M

Ease Health Inc., a startup that develops software for behavioral health providers, launched today with $41 million in early-stage funding.

The Series A round was led by Andreessen Horowitz. Ease will use the capital to expand the adoption of its software among large behavioral health providers. In addition, it plans to hire more engineers and develop new artificial intelligence features.

Behavioral health providers often use two separate applications to coordinate admissions and manage patient data. In many cases, billing is also handled with a standalone software product. That fragmentation can lead to inefficiencies. For example, staffers may have to sync data from the admissions application manually to the patient management system, which can lead to human error.

New York-based Ease promises to simplify day-to-day administrative tasks for clinics. It has developed a platform that combines admissions processing, patient management and billing tools in a single product. Besides easing tasks such as syncing data between tools, Ease says, using a single platform is more cost-efficient than buying multiple products.

During the admission phase, healthcare professionals can use Ease’s software to distribute the necessary forms to patients. The platform analyzes the data submitted via the forms to determine admission eligibility. Additionally, it uses artificial intelligence to identify returning patients, which removes the need for administrators to check manually.

Ease syncs the data collected during the admission phase to a built-in customer relationship management system. It also creates an electronic health record, or EHR, for the patient. The EHR enables healthcare professionals to centrally access clinical data such as medical notes.

The company provides an AI tool that automates some of the work involved in adding new notes to an EHR. The feature reduces the amount of time required for the task by up to 50%, it says. For clinic administrators, the platform provides a scheduling tool that makes it possible to assign work to healthcare professionals and track how well each activity is performed.

Ease Health also promises to ease certain other tasks. There’s a patient portal that streamlines the task of sharing information with patients. Additionally, dashboards powered by Microsoft Corp.’s Power BI business intelligence tool can be used to monitor clinic performance metrics.

“We built Ease to be the operating system for behavioral health: one patient record, one workflow, and one source of truth, with AI doing the work that used to require entire teams,” said co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Zach Cohen.

The funding round comes a few months after Heidi Health Trading Pty, another startup working to automate administrative tasks for healthcare providers, raised $65 million in funding. Earlier, Abridge Inc. closed a $300 million round led by Ease investor Andreessen Horowitz. The company’s platform uses AI to automate tasks such as creating medical notes and organizing clinical data.
