Sovereign private cloud services are becoming a practical answer for regulated organizations that need cloud operations without surrendering control of sensitive data. Arvato Systems GmbH and VMware by Broadcom Inc. are applying their decade-long partnership to that requirement.

Arvato uses VMware Cloud Foundation as the foundation for managed private cloud services hosted in its own data centers, according to Hansjörg Metzger (pictured left), managing director of multi-cloud and infrastructure at Arvato Systems. Its policy- and role-based environment allows the company to offer self-managed, co-managed and fully managed operating models.

“We host everything in our own data centers for healthcare, government, regulated industries,” Metzger said. “They know where the data are. They know that the data are secure. They know who operates these data.”

Sovereign private cloud supports seamless migration

The partnership was tested when Arvato moved a German government healthcare IT provider into its data center. Arvato used vDefend microsegmentation and security policies, Avi Load Balancer and HCX migration tools to maintain service while workloads moved between locations, according to Metzger.

“We had to migrate them from their own data center to our data center with zero downtime so that the end users in different states of these health insurances didn’t even recognize that we were migrating workloads from one data center to the other,” he said. “A secure migration: that is the most important thing for them. The data were not exposed during migration.”

Broadcom is now extending that integrated model to agentic workloads through new vDefend and Avi capabilities. The updates reflect a broader move to enforce security within the cloud infrastructure as autonomous agents increase interactions among applications, tools and data, according to Gandhi.

“What we are telling customers is, ‘Hey, you have to do zero trust,’” he said. “’And you have to protect yourself with lateral containment so agents and threats don’t move laterally.’”
