CoreWeave makes the case for an open, full-stack AI cloud
The full-stack AI cloud market is about more than access to graphics processing units: it also encompasses the tools needed to improve models and agents in production. Providers are seeking to distinguish themselves through the tooling, partners and expertise they combine with hardware.
CoreWeave Inc. is connecting training, inference and evaluation through its newly announced CoreWeave Forge development platform. The aim is to use what teams learn in production to improve models and agents, according to Jean English (pictured), chief marketing officer of CoreWeave.
“We believe that the loop should be connected. It should be open to different models, different frameworks, different clouds,” she said. “It really is about not just being closed. We believe that the loop should be connected. It should be open to different models, different frameworks, different clouds.”
English spoke with theCUBE Research’s Dave Vellante and John Furrier at the Fully Connected event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how the company is pairing GPU capacity with an open development loop, partner tooling and hands-on customer learning. (* Disclosure below.)
Building a full-stack AI cloud from first principles
CoreWeave built its platform specifically for AI workloads instead of adapting infrastructure designed for an earlier generation of web applications. Clients arriving from other clouds often cite gaps in speed, performance, capacity or tooling, English explained.
“In this market, I think the AI era calls for building from first principles,” she said. “That’s why we are purpose-built. It was really built from the ground up … and I think that’s why, when clients are with other clouds, they’re not able to move as fast and able to get the performance they need.”
Hardware still matters in that equation. CoreWeave was the first to bring up and validate Nvidia Corp.’s Vera Rubin platform, and the company recently earned SemiAnalysis’ Platinum ClusterMAX rating for a third consecutive time. The bigger opportunity sits above the chip, where partners supply tooling, infrastructure and application programming interface connections to a wide range of models, according to English.
“It’s so much beyond the GPU,” she said. “It’s about a full-stack AI cloud. That means that the tooling that we need, there’s got to be other partners that we work with.”
CoreWeave’s full-stack strategy extends beyond training to inference. The broader platform brings together compute, networking, storage, software and operations to support AI workloads in production. Customers can begin with one use case, according to English.
“A lot of customers right now are looking at inference,” she said. “The model makers are definitely training big frontier models. The enterprises are working on the best use case to show results and impact, and it’s not just, ‘AI is driving a transformation.’ It is, ‘What is the use case?’ that’s relevant for my team.”
