Guess What Facebook? Users Actually Prefer Google +

Facebook’s IPO has turned out to be a bit of disappointment for its investors since its launch on NASDAQ back in May, but one thing we didn’t expect was that its customers are also feeling dissatisfied with the service.

According to the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) E-Business Report, Facebook, which was already the lowest rated e-business in its survey, has seen its customer satisfaction fall by a margin of 8% to just 61%. This represents not just the lowest score for any e-business but it means that Facebook now drops into the bottom five of all 230 companies that ACSI ranked.

Meanwhile, despite its unpopularity, Google +, which has been dubbed by many users as a ghost town, is actually gaining some traction when it comes to customer satisfaction (at least for those who use it). The social media network made its first appearance in the ACSI rankings, ending up with commendable score of 78% that puts it on level terms with none other than Wikipedia.

Another social media service making its debut in the rankings this year is Pinterest. The pinboard-style network may have proven to be a massive hit with female users, but it’s obviously not going down too well with everyone, hence it’s disappointing 69% rating. Other big names to disappoint include Twitter, which scored 64%, and LinkedIn, which came in at just 63%. Overall, as a separate category, social media dropped by 1.4% in customer satisfaction ratings, to a disappointing 69% overall.

So what is it about Google + that makes it so appealing to its (admittedly few) users? Lack of advertising is one thing, according to the survey, whilst Google + also does better when it comes to privacy. In addition, many believe it offers a better mobile experience.

Facebook on the other hand, has a lot to answer for in the eyes of its users. Well-documented concerns about privacy and ads continue to upset users, but by far the most frequent complaint has been about the changes to its interface, most especially the big one – the new Timeline feature.

Larry Freed, president and CEO of foreSee, said that the survey proved that Google +was streets ahead of their biggest rival when it came to customer experience:

“Facebook and Google+ are competing on two critical fronts: customer experience and market penetration. Google+ handily wins the former, and Facebook handily wins the latter, for now,” Larry Freed, ForeSee’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “It’s worth asking how much customer satisfaction matters for Facebook, given its unrivaled 800 million user base. But I expect Google to leverage its multiple properties and mobile capabilities to attract users at a rapid pace. If Facebook doesn’t feel the pressure to improve customer satisfaction now, that may soon change.”

What hasn’t been made clear, its different report takes into account the fact that Google plus has significantly less users than Facebook. Even so Mark Zuckerberg surely won’t enjoy hearing this news, given his insistence that making users happy takes priority over advertisers.
