This Week in the Cloud: Files, Alliances and $10M in Funding

A number of cloud updates cross the wired this week, and the ones coming from the direction of Google were among those that stood out the most.

The search giant launched a partner program for vendors that want to get in on the Google Cloud Platform. That’s the name of several combined services including Cloud Storage, the Google App Engine and the BigQuery analytics engine  – offerings that have become extremely popular among developers.

Equipped with new tools and resources courtesy of Google, partners will be able to expand the ecosystem with software and services that supplement the core Cloud Platform portfolio.

Yesterday, all-flash storage array maker Pure Storage unveiled a partner program of its own. The P3 program is being dubbed as an opportunity for resellers to get a chunk of the $4 billion enterprise flash market, and Pure is offering pricing incentives and giveaways to try and get VARS aboard the bandwagon.

Another huge update comes from VMware. The virtualization giant paid over $1.2 billion for Nicira, a privately held maker of network virtualization software. This should help the company expand its presence to the software defined network, and realize a data center transformation that John Furrier talked about in a recent piece.

Lastly, Mashery raised $10 million from Cisco Formative Ventures, First Round Capital and .406 Ventures. OpenView Venture Partners led the round. The firm offers a service that helps users manage their APIs -, Matt Weinberger discussed their role in the cloud delivery model, and the company’s position in this space. Mashery has seen a 272 percent increase in traffic year over year and a total of 160,000 devs are using its service, according to some statics that it released after announcing the funding.
