Silver Spring Networks has been in the utilities’ software business for 10 years now. Although this industry is more often than not behind the curve in IT, the vendor is modernizing its portfolio. This week the firm announced a new service called SilverLink, a solution that aims to make the relevant information easily accessible to every worker and not just the back office bunch that it has been catering to.
The subscription-based cloud offering has two main components. The first is SilverLink Console, a collection of dashboards that deliver real-time performance data, alerts and visibility into infrastructure. The second is the SilverLink Operations Center, an aggregated stream of operations data customers can be integrate into their existing IT systems. Silver Spring has managed to introduce the cloud to a market that continues to rely on legacy infrastructure and makes it work in their existing environment.
Don Reeves,VP of smart grid services and operations for Silver Spring Networks, explained his company’s new solution and what it offers the client base,
“SilverLink cloud services deliver targeted and specific data tailored to the needs of distinct teams within the utility, leading to greater operational insights, rapid problem identification and resolution, and improved efficiency and reliability. The speed and specificity of SilverLink insights enable utilities to save time and money by liberating them from generic reporting systems and expensive custom integrations.”
Silver Spring Networks isn’t the only company capitalizing on the power industry. For example,IBM is also a big player in the smart grid business. Big Blue landed a huge contract with the Air Force earlier this year to manage all of the facilitates and infrastructure the military division maintains globally. Given the increased focus on being green and reducing budgets, we’re likely to see the cloud increasingly begin to infiltrate the power industry.
