Cloud Computing Grows in Australia

Cloud computing isn’t a US only phenomenon. Thanks to large technology vendors launching major services, the use of cloud computing is growing around the world, including  Australia.

One of the big changes coming to Australia’s cloud industry is National Broadbrand Network (NBN). This will provide the low latency of a fixed, high-speed network that has the potential to help providers compete with other international markets, particularly in the U.S.

Data center location and contract jurisdiction are two concerns that have impacted cloud adoption in Australia. Many  Australian businesses have mandatory requirements to keep data in Australia, which limits the cloud providers they can use.  However, even data stays within the country, some  Australian organizations with US-based operations can still be subjected to the US Patriot Act  due to treaties signed between the US and Australia.

As in the US, minimum commitment has also become important consideration for Australian businesses evaluating cloud contracts. Businesses tend to prefer shorter the commitments, because they provide more flexibility. It is becoming more common for Australian providers to allow sign-ups for as little as one hour, if a business has used the provider previously.

Other countries are also experiencing the cloud phenomena. Cloud computing utilization is also soaring in China and India. The US still has the highest rate of cloud consumption, but it’s clear global demand is increasing.
