The Cloud Review: VMware’s App Play, Adobe’s Cloud Games and Nirvanix

The past week was a busy one for us and the crew of the theCube in particular, who traveled all the way to Frankfurt in order to bring us the latest from HP Discover 2012. You can find all the interviews and product announcements from the conference at SiliconAngle’s YouTube channel.

Discover may have been the center point for the cloud vertical in recent days, but there were some other gems as well. For one, EMC and VMware decided to take the next step with their cloud and application development tools.

On Thursday VMware announced that, together with its parent company, that it’s spinning off a combined total of 1,400 workers to create a new venture dedicated to cloud-based app development. The organization, named Pivotal Initiative, will inherit not only talent but also several key assets including the Spring framework and Cloud Foundry.

Pivotal will allow EMC and VMware to allocate more resources to core market growth without having to let go of this particular side of their portfolios.  The spinoff is expected to be made official sometime in the second quarter of 2013, according to the VMware exec who blogged the update.

Adobe gives in to the cloud

Adobe has also been doing some thinking about its app development portfolio, and it apparently reached the same conclusion: the cloud is the way to go. Its new Game Developer Tools  is a hosted service that provides the resources needed to create platform-agonistic Flash games for web browsers, desktops and mobile devices.

Nirvanix also had a big update last week: the cloud storage firm appointed Dru Borden as its new CEO. Borden, who previously served as the company’s chief strategy officer, is replacing former chief exec and current Oracle head hardware strategist Scott Genereux.
