SAP Snaps Up SmartOps, Optimized for the Mainstream Retailer

SAP acquired inventory optimization specialist SmartOps for an undisclosed sum.

SmartsOps is a Pittsburg, PA-based firm that has been developing supply chain software since the year 2000. Its solutions include a demand sensing platform that analyzes shopping patterns to predict how long inventory will last, and a supply chain optimization module that is compatible with almost all mainstream ERP systems.  These two complementing apps are offered together as the Inventory Optimization Suite, a package can be deployed on-premise solution or consumed as a service.

SmartOps first caught SAP’s attention in 2006. Two years later the companies started collaborating on software development, and they’ve maintained strong relations ever since.  The acquisition marks the most significant milestone in this nearly decade-long partnership.

The German database giant said that firm’s assessment algorithms will be integrated into the SAP Demand Signal Management platform. The IP will also be bundled with HANA, SAP’s in-memory DB, to produce a “real-time supply chain” solution that will churn out probabilities as the raw data comes in.

We are at a turning point in the global market for supply and demand technology,” said Abdul Razack, senior vice president and head of Customer Engagement and Strategic Projects, SAP. “With the addition of SmartOps, SAP will be able to dramatically accelerate and improve the performance of real-time world-class supply chain management solutions that give customers the decisive competitive edge to succeed and grow their business.”

Earlier this month, SAP acquired another small firm by the name of Ticket-Web. The startup is responsible for an event management platform that consists of a multi-lingual ticketing engine, and a custom CRM system that’s meant to link it with other business processes. Terms of this deal weren’t disclosed either.
