Oracle Acquires Nimbula – Now Part of OpenStack ?

Oracle announced it has agreed to acquire Nimbula, a provider of private cloud infrastructure management software.

When megatrends heat up Oracle has no problem stepping up to the plate and buying their way into the market.  Here public and enterprise grade clouds are what the customers want.

With Nimbula’s technology Oracle can offer managed infrastructure to  deliver service, quality and availability of Oracle and open source workloads in private and hybrid cloud environments.

Nimbula’s product is complementary to Oracle, and is expected to be integrated with Oracle’s cloud offerings. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2013.

Many have been debating the open vs closed approaches.   Experts agree open will win over closed solutions as the future architectures of IT are being reinvented.  One these megatrends is that new software IT scale out and open architectures.  Once these architectures get firmly into place the solutions from the vendors will flood the market.  Then the tide rises.  Until then lots of “jockeying” going on.

Nimbula was founded by the team that developed the industry-leading Amazon EC2, Nimbula funded by Sequoia and Accel Partners, offers a cloud operating system that combines the scalability and operational efficiencies of the public cloud with the control, security and trust of today’s most advanced data centers.

Oracle gets a nice chess piece here and a seat at the OpenStack table.
