High Expectations for Software-Led Storage at #EMCworld – Breaking Analysis

The 2013 EMC World Conference kicked off this morning at the world famous Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada, and the energy at the event is only rivaled by its size.

But of course people didn’t come to EMC World to walk around a convention center, but rather, they came to see what the Hopkinton-based big-data company is coming up with next.  And boy, do they have some exciting things in the works…

“This is an opportunity for the company to present its view and its strategy from the top,” said Wikibon Chief Analyst Dave Vellante, “This event is bigger than ever.” If stock value is any metric worth considering (and it is), EMC has been having a less than stellar year, so coming out at EMC in full force could be exactly what the doctor ordered. “All the product groups are out in full force,” commented Villante, “they’re now going to talk about how they’re now a confederation.”

The confederation idea and diversification in business model is already drawing comparisons from analysts with the likes of IBM, who has long been considered the titan of the tech industry. However, with the buyout of VMWare and a couple of new projects in the works, the comparisons haven’t been unwarranted.  Considering that EMC plans to announce details to its software defined storage strategy, this event could very well mark the beginning of an inflection point in technology.  Vellante expressed excitement for the new direction, stating “I think that software defined is going to be big,” and it appears he couldn’t be more right.

When a company’s already worth $30 Billion, anything they do will have a big effect, but for EMC, along with the rest of the world, perhaps these ambitious investments in big data and infrastructure could take the world one step closer to a new paradigm, not only in big data, but in how human being interact with each other.
