In the first day of Hadoop Summit 2013, John Furrier and Dave Vellante, theCUBE co-hosts, broadcast live from San Jose, right in the heart of Silicon Valley, where the major topics revolved around Hadoop-driven business and Business Intelligence, reference architectures, enterprise data architecture and Hadoop (Disruptive) Economics.

First guest of the day, Rob Bearden, CEO at Hortonworks, spoke about Hadoop and their efforts to turn it into a viable Enterprise data platform.

Hadoop is an enormous platform, the biggest oportunity it has is becoming an enterprise data platform. Once it becomes that, it will have the ability to generate the next data architecture through the enterprise. “This is too big for any one company to do alone,” stresses Beardon. It’s critical for all that’s at stake that all the community come together and collaborate.

Rob is the former chief operating officer of both SpringSource and JBoss, two of the most commercially successful open source companies in history. Dave Vellante brought this up when mentioning the reluctance of some people in the industry to adopt open source, for fear it doesn’t generate revenue. Hadoop is a whole new thing. It’s a new way of managing and architecting the data infrastructure.

“Hortonworks’s role is to be deeply engaged in the community and to be a steward of helping Apache Hadoop evolve to become an Enterprise data platform,” says Bearden. “The enterprise understands there is the ability to unlock the value of all the data that they have and put it to a central repository on Hadoop.”

The modern era of computing

More than ever it is evident that there’s pressure to accelerate the speed of innovation. There’s talk everywhere about hyperscale and hyper availability, and Bearden agrees: “We want to make the market function as big and as fast as we can.”

Step number one is making Hadoop an Enterprise viable platform, continuing to innovate the core. The YARN based architecture of Hadoop 2 is the most significant change introduced to the Hadoop project. Hortonworks provides the data services like monitoring and management, everything that the Enterprise expects and requires in order to manage large volumes of data, at scale, for mission critical applications. Hortonworks Data Platform comprises of the essential Apache Hadoop components needed for the big data projects.

The enterprise loves OpenStack, because it sends a message of modularity. Vellante mentioned parts of Bearden’s Keynote, where he called up some of the people that were trying to fragment Apache Hadoop. He warned against vendors “fracturing” Apache Hadoop by replacing some bits with proprietary components, hinting at Cloudera, MapR and Pivotal. Rob Bearden points out that “very large entities are threatened by Apache Hadoop, because they loose footprint and price control with their customers.”
