OSCON OpenStack Highlights: From the Private Cloud to DevOps

ozens of open source software vendors are showcasing their new products at this week’s O’Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) in Portland. The OpenStack project, which marks its third anniversary today, is at the center of attention.
German software giant SUSE grabbed headlines this morning after it released a beta version of its OpenStack Grizzy-based private cloud platform. SUSE Cloud 2.0 introduces a number of improvements, including support for the Crowbar automation framework and full integration with Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESXi. It’s also compatible with Cinder, OpenStack’s block storage component.
“SUSE Cloud 2.0 is the next version of SUSE Cloud, the original enterprise-ready OpenStack distribution for building Infrastructure-as-a-Service private clouds,” said Michael Miller, the vice president of global alliances and marketing for SUSE, in a statement. “The beta programme helps battle-harden the software for customers as they deploy proof of concepts with the latest technology, and it allows selected partners to ensure integration of their solutions with SUSE Cloud.”
SUSE Cloud 2.0 made its debut alongside SwiftCloud’s OpenStack-based object store. The solution combines the open framework with SwiftCloud’s software-defined storage technology, monitoring functions from Nagios, and a simplified drag and drop interface. It shares a number of similarities with Inktank’s Ceph platform, which was recently implemented by the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
CloudMunch is the third company that opted to unveil its newest offering today. The Bellevue, Washington-based software maker pulled the curtains back on CloudMunch Open DevOps, a service that aims to streamline app deployment in OpenStack-based clouds. The plug and play DevOps toolkit features self-service provisioning, an App Builder environment for application development and integration, and a “customizable software delivery progression workflow” designed to automate QA processes.
Today’s product announcement follow a milestone update to Rackspace’s Android app, which now features integration with the cloud host’s OpenStack platform.
