Nike Unveils New FuelBand SE for Self-Trackers : More Colors + Power
Have you seen Nike’s new FuelBand? Is Fitbit aiming to dominate the fitness tracking business? Find out more with this week’s Quantified Self roundup.
Nike FuelBand SE Unveiled
Nike is holding an event in New York today, where it has unveiled the next version of its popular fitness tracking band, the Nike FuelBand SE. So what’s new with the device? The FuelBand SE still features the same form factor, the same LED lights, and a single button. Nothing much has changed, but at least now, consumers have more neon colors to choose from.
This is quite surprising that Nike didn’t come up with an entirely new product or introduce new features. It’s certainly something for Nike to consider, given the booming market emerging around the quantified self movement. The competition is coming from some of the top ecosystems in the world — Apple and Google. Apple is loading its newest devices with more sensors, having equipped the iPhone 5s with the M7 chips, while Google’s smartwatch inches closer to becoming a reality.
Fitbit Force
If you love your Fitbit Flex, you’ll love the new Fitbit Force. It works the same way as the Flex, but now, it doubles as a watch. The band where the LED notification lights were placed has been replaced by an OLED display, complete with a button that lets you see the time and cycle through various stats.
Aside from the new watch feature, the Fitbit Force now has a built-in altimeter that measures how many floors you’ve climbed in a day. It still has the old features like the activity and sleep tracker, wireless data sync, and the ability to see real-time progress across devices. But it also has a new “Active Minutes” feature that tracks moderate or high-intensity cardio exercise.
Fitbit Force is now available for $129.95.
BabyWatch
Expecting parents often reach a point where all they want to do is monitor their unborn baby, worrying if the baby is doing okay inside the womb. Going for monthly checkups is advised, but for those who want 24/7 monitoring, that may be a bit difficult to accomplish.
But if you have the BabyWatch monitor, you can hear the fetus’ heartbeat anytime and even share them with your friends or doctor. It’s a hand-held, portable Doppler that is easy to use. You just need to plug it into your smartphone, place the heart monitor on the tummy, and start seeing and hearing your baby’s heartrate. The BabyWatch app hears and visualizes the fetus’ heartbeat, shares experiences with loved ones across social networks, tracks and organizes their prenatal care, and calculates relevant dates throughout the pregnancy.
