Google Glass wait-list now open for US residents

If you can’t wait for Google Glass to hit the stores, here’s your chance to get one earlier: Google has opened up a new wait-list for those who’re eager to get their hands on a pair of its high-tech specs.

You read that right, the wait-list is now open for anyone to sign up, as long as you are a resident in the US, and you have $1,500 to spare.  You can register here, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get a Google Glass, because remember, you are only signing up for the wait-list.

So what’s the big deal about the wait-list?  Nothing really, it’s just Google’s way of expanding its reach to developers and other interested parties.

Recently, existing Glass Explorers were given three invites to give to their friends, family, or other developers, who are interested in getting their hands on Google Glass ahead of others.

Also, existing Explorers who bought their devices before October 28, 2013, can swap their old device for the updated version of Glass coming later this year.  It’s not clear yet if the swap will be free of charge or if there’s a fee to pay, but Explorers will have 60 days to register for the swapping program once it launches.  After that, they will no longer be able swap their old pair for a new Glass, but instead they must have pay for it.

In other Google Glass news, the device has been updated with a new “listen to” feature that allows users to stream music, search for saved playlists, or search from the web.  The new feature, plus the ‘Sound Search’ capability that was introduced a few months back, will allow Glass to deliver a whole new music experience.

And to make sure Explorers will fully enjoy the new experience, a new earpiece will be offered for the device later this month, available to buy in the Google Glass Accessory Store. The earpiece will plug into the microUSB port on the Google Glass, and will cost $85.
