An agile leviathan : Craig Nunes on HP’s refreshed StoreOnce | #HPDiscover

Craig Nunes, a frequent guest on SiliconANGLE’s theCUBE, is the VP of Converged Infrastructure Storage for HP. He joined John Furrier and Dave Vellante to discuss some recent storage related announcements and to give his take on the state of the company and the HP Discover conference.

Most recently, HP has focused on mid-range storage options. Nunes noted they were happy to offering their high-end Tier 1 clustered architecture down to the mid-range. This, he claims, is easier to do in a world of growing flash adoption that requires clustered architecture.

“HP is taking market share from EMC in the mid-range,” Nunes claimed. In this area, the company has enjoyed a 68 percent growth.

Additionally, HP announced only yesterday how they are now offering a top-to-bottom refresh of their StoreOnce product. “The real value has everything to do with reducing our customers risk when it comes to recovering their data,” Nunes stated. He went on to point out that they will, on the high end, be able to restore customer data 10 times faster than EMC’s best available product.

StoreOnce also offers software-based encryption. “We also have a new program called the “get-protected guarantee,” Nunes said. “When [customers] move to StoreOnce, we guarantee a 95 percent reduction in recovery time.” HP will also perform a back-up assessment, helping their customers to find and identify broken and unnecessary backup operations. This free service, he claims, will show customers how they can save money.

Asked about the mood and environment throughout the company, Nunes commented, “I think, generally speaking, you are seeing a huge focus on innovation. You are going to see a big move in technology customers want.” In addition to a focus on innovation, Nunes stated that the culture at HP is transitioning to a faster pace that hasn’t been seen in the company in some time. “There is a sense of urgency from the top of the company down. Everyone feels that drive, that need to move fast and respond quicker to what our customers need and want,” he concluded.

SiliconANGLE’s theCUBE will be broadcasting live over the next two days from HP’s Discover conference in Barcelona, Spain.
