HP Discover is set to kick off on June 10, 2014 at the The Venetian | The Palazzo Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thousands of IT professionals are expected to attend the annual event, hoping to learn the latest in HP’s efforts to regain market share in an industry that’s shifting focus to software-led infrastructure.
Broadcasting live from the event is SiliconANGLE’s premier production theCUBE, hosted by Wikibon co-founder and chief analyst Dave Vellante along with SiliconANGLE founding Editor and HP-watcher John Furrier.
Watch the live show at SiliconANGLE.tv, and join the conversation at CrowdChat.
For attendees
This year’s attendees will hear from HP execs such as President and CEO Meg Whitman, EVP for HP Software George Kadifa, EVP for Enterprise Services Mike Nefkens, EVP and GM for Enterprise Group Bill Veghte. Other track keynote speakers hail from Fusion-io, Nationwide Insurance, Levi Strauss & Co, to name a few.
No conference is complete without an outlet for attendees to enjoy themselves and this year, HP invites attendees to their Celebration Night on June 11 at the Venetian Ballroom and Hall D. Attendees will find cuisines from all over the world, and even feature some popular traditions such as the Oktoberfest.
What to expect
For HP, this year’s show will be all about the continued turnaround of its business. The company has faced a string of layoffs in the past year, and it appears HP is still in cost-cutting mode. It’s a slow change, possibly slower than Meg Whitman, HP’s fourth CEO in four years, would like.
That’s not to say change isn’t happening at all. There are three primary groups within the HP ecosystem to watch: Enterprise, Software and Cloud.
As the enterprise remains a key target for HP’s evolving services, rethinking infrastructure is a necessary component for attracting and keeping customers. To that end, networking will be an area of interest for this week’s show, as theCUBE hosts dig into HP’s software-defined networking approach and how it compares to alternative methods in the market.
As far as storage evolution goes, data protection and flash will be big areas of focus, determining HP’s strategy for this particular opportunity. Storage plays an integral role in converged infrastructure build outs, so HP’s server strategy is expected to be a hot topic this week with an emphasis on SAP HANA, notes Wikibon chief analyst Dave Vellante.
In the Software group, HP’s injected new leadership into its company with Robert Youngjohns taking over for George Kadifa. A focus on HAVEn, HP’s enterprise-grade Hadoop is also expected, along with HP’s other software-driven initiatives including Hadoop, Autonomy and Vertica, an HP project that’s gained momentum in recent months, HP tells us. How these will integrate with other IT necessities such as enterprise-grade security will be an important question at this week’s event.
For the cloud, HP faces similar challenges as the rest of the industry, building solutions to meet interest in public cloud offerings and providing scalability for a resource-hungry enterprise environment. Areas of interest during HP Discover include HP Helion, hybrid cloud solutions, and HP’s strategy in attracting new clients to its camp.
