San Jose Earthquakes will accept Bitcoin starting May 25th

san-jose-quakes-bitcoinThe San Jose Earthquakes Major League Soccer team made a quake of their own today in the media as mainstream outlets caught onto the team’s Bitcoin news. First reported by SiliconANGLE, the San Jose Quakes intend to start accepting Bitcoin for tickets, concessions, and merchandise on May 25th.

Bloomberg ran a story this morning quoting the Quakes’ President Dave Kaval about the matter.

Fans will be able to use a Bitcoin wallet from their mobile devices to make purchases at Buck Shaw Stadium, the current home of the Quakes.

While it was previously reported that the Quakes intended to go with Bitpay as their Bitcoin payment processor, Bloomberg reports that the team sided with Coinbase. Kaval tells SiliconANGLE that the reason Coinbase won out is user experience.

Kaval says that Coinbase integrated easily with the Quakes’ point-of-sale system and has a mobile app that will allow fans to pay in person rather than online. This means that concessions and merchandise in the stadium can be bought and paid for with BTC and with similar ease to any other mobile transaction.

With this move, the Quakes will become the second professional sports team to accept Bitcoin. The Sacramento Kings, an NBA team, started accepting the virtual currency on March 1st.
