Day 1 of the Hadoop Summit 2014 conference is in the books, with an ongoing CrowdChat covering the conversations from theCUBE capturing the top threads from the event.

Hadoop Summit 2014

The Summit, a leading Apache Hadoop industry conference, has grown significantly over the years, and throughout the day, theCUBE, led by hosts John Furrier and Jeff Kelly, featured the best of thought leaders, use cases, data scientists, data analysts, and developers at the event.

Top guests

Early on, a surprise guest Inhi Cho Suh, Vice President of IBM Big Data Integration & Governance lit up the CrowdChat with a highly voted conversation.  Among the favorable points from this interview was the comment that IBM is finishing the Beta on Big SQL 3.0, the company’s SQL on Hadoop product, and that a session on the product will take place today at the Summit.  Suh promised that it will take SQL to ‘new areas’.

Suh also discussed the company’s work with business schools and tech schools worldwide towards building a data-related curriculum and job scene for chief data officers and data scientists.

UC Berkeley professor Joe Hellerstein,  the CEO of data startup Trifacta was another popular interview on CrowdChat from theCUBE. Hellerstein’s comments on the evolving story of who is buying Hadoop and that the technology is becoming increasingly relevant to the line of business resonated with the CrowdChat channel.  The Trifacta leader also laid out a bunch of use case and strategic benefits of his company’s products.

Another popular guest from theCUBE on CrowdChat yesterday was Gartner Vice President Merv Adrian.  One of Adrian’s early comments pointed out how the maturation cycle for big inflection points in technology run about a decade.  Furrier’s agreement on this point was followed by Adrian’s perspective of the market, where he said if you’re not moving, you are behind.  Adrian also stated that one of the benchmarks for mature market movement depends on a favorite metric — money.

Security was a big topic at the event, with news of products to make Hadoop more secure, and repeated mention of security updates from Hadoop market frontrunners Cloudera and Hortonworks.  One of Adrian’s statements further described how important and necessary security is today.

Highlighting the competitive climate at the conference, Adrian later tweeted how eight different companies on the show floor proclaimed to have the fastest SQL on Hadoop.

Rounding out the highlights, the synergy behind the conference is unmistakable, as Hortonworks’ Marc Holmes pointed out how “basically everyone is hiring.”

SiliconANGLE’s own Mark Hopkins added that the Hadoop pegboards are always full of job postings. Twitter user Brian Beam (@SnatchBrain) an attendee at the conference tweeted out a picture of the job board some time later.
