Tracking HP as it “gets back to the garage” | #HPdiscover
Hewlett-Packard famously started out as two guys innovating in a garage. Many years later, HP is finding its way back to those roots. We got a glimpse over three days at the HP Discover event, broadcast live on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s flagship product. Simultaneously, a discussion on CrowdChat, SiliconANGLE’s new social media aggregator, captured the action and thought leadership throughout the broadcast. The takeaway was that HP is climbing back with innovation on several fronts, which it carried under the banner of a “new vision of IT”. It is a message that should carry well to HP’s audience within the various business lines.
This renewed direction is evident in the trajectory of products that included data analysis, storage, cloud and HP’s server lines. The company has taken criticism in the midst of a brand restart, faced with layoffs and a soft enterprise marketing message. HP is an industry giant that is going to have to leverage the trust built into its brand and relationships with the enterprise.
Over the final two days of broadcast, a pair of HP customers were front and center on theCUBE, telling the tale of real-word successes in their efforts to modernize, save and streamline, starting with Bill Lewkowski. The CIO of Metro Health talked about his organization’s efforts to digitize and centralize all patient records.

Sean Henkel, the Director Enterprise Infrastructure for Spectrum Health was also on the broadcast, describing the advantages of HP’s Storage in his organization.

HP talked up its server offerings as well as its leadership spot in the server market. Jim Ganthier, VP Global Marketing for HP Servers, questioned Cisco’s recent number one ranking, calling it a non-global, revenue-only claim.

With HP’s server game on full display on theCUBE, CrowdChat participants launched questions and comments as guests dropped in to talk about convergence, density and cooling technology. Dr. Tom Bradicich, HP’s vice president of engineering and servers, offered a glimpse of innovation and HP’s ambition in the hyper-scalable area.

HP Servers Division Senior Vice President and General Manager, Antonio Neri talked about IBM divesting their x86 business, calling it an ‘outsource’ maneuver that meant IBM was no longer a player in the new style of IT.

HP’s cloud business has been a matter of great interest, and the company provided quite a bit of detail on theCUBE. HP’s cloud offering is enterprise-centric, having developed a path and portfolio with roots in customer relationships. HP has done this with a commitment to open source platform OpenStack and Helion, which HP described as a hardened commercial version of OpenStack for companies that HP uses in its own cloud.
HP also shared its wide-reaching support for OpenStack, embracing developers on their platforms and financial commitments to the cause. Discussion of an increase in Hybrid cloud interest entered the flow of conversation as well.

The emerging Helion product was a focal point, described as a common platform for private, public and managed cloud that gives its users data and application flexibility. HP talked about changing the very term ‘cloud’.
Representing HP’s Vertica and Autonomy products, CUBE guests illustrated how HP is integrating these technology plays into services and platforms, such as IDOL ONDemand.
